introduction

Postby toot3000 » Tue Jun 17, 2014 8:23 pm

Although I’ve spent a lot of time drinking alcohol over the years, I don’t have a still and have never made any alcohol so it’s hard to know what questions to ask. I’ve been reading as much info as I can and would like to start distilling clear spirit. Seeing that I disposed of my tig welder 40 years ago, and was a whizz at silver soldering, I no longer have the equipment to make my own still. The reason for my post is to find someone who will make me a still that will produce quality spirit with a minimum amount of time and effort. I live in Sydney. its going to happen in the laundry, the garage is full.

electric boiler 30 litres or there about worried about the overall height

reflux condenser for clear spirit [essences]

try to eliminate filtering running it through twice no problem [dont want to cop $100 .00 upfront filtering costs]

also would like it to be able to convert to run mashes if i ever feel ambitious

probably still leaves a lot of ?s to ask hope someones interest is peaked

has to sit on laundry bench

estimate would be good

cheers toot

Welcome mate :handgestures-thumbupleft:

First question is what drinks do you actually want to make? Vodka, Rum, Gin, Whisky, Brandy etc?

Welcome mate :)

First off, as Sam has said, what is it you want to make? If you plan on making whiskey or rum out of vodka and essence, you may as well just go straight to making real whiskey and rum with a pot still...

What is your height restriction? A reflux still really needs to have some height to work correctly; not as important with a pot.

If thats all you want to make then why not a pot still and make gear 100 times better than an essence?

Welcome toot, start off with a pot still, thats all you need to make good Whiskeys and Bourbons. You will be able to make better tasting whiskeys than by going down the essence path. I have 2 simple pot stills and make my own Whiskey and Bourbons.
