Hi from Melbourne

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Hi from Melbourne

Postby brad81 » Mon Oct 20, 2014 5:30 pm

Hi all,

Just wanted to introduce myself.

I've been brewing all grain beer for the last two years with no ill effect, ill effect, ill effect. Somewhat more rotund though.

I was given a keg by my brother in law a couple of weeks ago with a brass/copper thread thing that screws on with some rubber seals etc.

I'm looking to turn this 50L keg into a pot still, and I've been keenly looking at all things shiny you fine lot have been building.

There isn't an immediate need to go straight to electric, but that is the path I want to take.

Still need to do some more reading, I know I need to build a column, and condenser (looking at making a liebig or graham (if I'm feeling energetic)), still unsure what the lyne arm is for, but looking forward to finding out.

Mainly looking to make a few batches of scotch a year from grain, and letting them age in some smallish 5L barrels for a few years.

Happy to learn from the community.

Cheers,

Brad

Welcome Brad,

Plenty of fine whisky to be learned about here, there's some real good reading in the library about scotch's too :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'm not far off from stilling a heavy peated AG mash myself :happy-partydance:

Enjoy!

Welcome Brad,

If you have been brewing all grain beer your equipment and experience will serve you well in your search for nice whisky.

Good luck with your still build,

Cheers,

Richard

Looks like a good start mate :) you can just about make a still out of anything once you get the hang of it. If you want to go electric I've been using a 2200W element that screws in with a seal for YEARS I'm on my second one due to the wires eventually breaking but other than that works a treat. Its a long stainless sticky looking thing with a IEC power connector on it

Boil up time must be into the 100 min mark? Fk that give me 4800W+ or I'm going back to gas :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

Get yourself a pair of 2400w elements from 5 Star, and run them off of 2 different circuits. You'll probably want a power controller for one of them as well...

If you go five star elements you won't have to worry about them failing. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a single reported failure and there are a lot out there now :handgestures-thumbupleft:
