Another Sandgroper

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Another Sandgroper

Postby Blueywa » Thu Jan 22, 2015 12:18 am

G'day everyone.
I'm in the Perth Metro Area, and have been using an Air Still quite successfully for a little while - yes I know they are fool proof.
Just finished filtering 10 litres of 40% through carbon for the third time.
I'm using 2 Litre glass flagons and storing it in a dark cupboard until I decide what flavours to add.
A mate has just re-started distilling and is already using a real still. :)
I am considering moving to a reflux setup because I would like higher quality product and less waste.
The little Air Still works well, but a PURE distillers reflux unit would be nice.
My mate reckons the column on these units isn't tall enough to get best results??
Hoping that I will get the right information from you all, and if I can contribute all the better.
Cheers, Ray.

I currently use a pure distilling reflux still. As far as reflux stills go, it is very good. As Sam said take some time to work out what you actually want to make. I really like my reflux still but I am at a point where I want to make better quality alcohol so I am looking at pot stills (I just cant afford one at the moment).

Although hoping to sneak one in with my shed build ;) Shhhh

Welcome aboard

Welcome Bluey!

As said, have a read before you rush into buying another still. What is it you like to drink?

:laughing-rolling: Hahaha I though you would end up on here :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Welcome aboard. There is a wealth of info on here, you just need a lot of time to digest it, well I do anyway because it take a while to sink in :laughing-rolling:

Seeing as how you like Whisky, Bourbon and flavoured clear, you might want to consider a reflux & pot combo. or you will end up with both eventually.
Don't forget, you have a mate down south who can help you out a bit with soldering etc ;-)

Thank you all for the welcome.
As my old mate PhilT says I'm fond of a good bourbon and when I can get one a decent single malt scotch.
Having said that I've been known to drink whatever's available. :)
I figure the little Air Still is a good basic unit so will probably keep it, and the 10 litres its produced will tied me over until I decide what to upgrade to:- maybe a reflux and an alembic??
No rush.
