Whiskey Dome

Postby Westshine » Thu Feb 28, 2019 2:53 pm

Does anyone have any specific experience using a whiskey dome? If so, what observations can you provide or comment on? I'm looking to buy one to convert my bubbler into a pot still for running Gin and Bourbon.

wouldnt bother on small still will make stuff all difference. Pot stills that use helmets onions or inclined lyne arms are huge and in this case size matters. All these things are to add passive reflux and increase abv. on a bubbler rc does the reflux control..

I just ran 70L at 40% (been stockpiling TPW and FFV for a gin run) through my new plated column. I removed the plates and didn't run the RC, effectively just running as a pot still. I had a bag of gin botanics floating in the boiler as well.

At the end I produced 3 litres @ ~82% (oily product), 27L @ ~75% (yummy gin), 6L @ ~30% (tails). I cut production when it got to 20%. All up I put 28L @ 100% in and got 24.5L @ 100% out, or 87.5% efficiency.

I really can't see any performance reason to invest in a whiskey dome, except for wank value.

So I bought one just for that reason alone, arrives in 7 days.

Brilliant. Wank value is not to be sneered at. If it looks good and you get joy out of looking at it and using it, it was worthwhile. Be sure to post a photo of your ace new setup for us to check out once you get it built! Those copper whisky helmets to look sexy.

S45, it took a bit longer to get here but no less wank appeal.

I think we would all have one at that price! I'm pretty sure it was about $238USD, the copper mesh and stainless spool where extra.
