Was wondering if anyone could point me in direction of best place to get a ph meter at a good price.
I am about to start some rum and brandy washes and am guessing I will be needing one.

I was thinking about ph meters today. Not sure 10 bucks on ebay would be my choice. Not even sure what shop to go to to look at some

I've got something similar - paid a shit load more than that a long time ago though! whatever you buy, get yourself a little container of Ph buffer to keep your instrument calibrated. Jaycar sells it.

Think mine was about $30..yes thats same as mine..

Works OK you just have to check it with the buffer solution before you first use it. I check with the buffer every so often just to make sure the readings are correct.

It is cheap but seems to do the job, guess you don't know how accurate they are unless you can compare using an expensive lab unit.

I've got the same yellow one and compared it with industrial types in the lab at RMIT uni, the difference was about 0.1 at most. Note, that you have to calibrate almost every use for accuracy, ( if it is weeks between uses) even if you get the expensive industrial ones. Don't contaminate the buffer and store it in the dark, it'll grow some mould but I keep using it for about a year. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yep I've got the yellow one as well. They may not be the best on the market but hey it will get you close enough for a ferment :handgestures-thumbupleft:

As long as you calibrate it you should get an understanding of where the PH is sitting, which is probably all yOu need. You will probably need to adjust for tempature manually.
I purchased mine for $240 many years ago when making wine professionally. It compensates for tempature automatically.
$10 bucks seems like good value so I will buy one and do a comparison.

The yellow one has ATC on it which is meant to be Automatic Temp Correction.....

I had the yellow one with ATC on it for a few months - worked well until I dropped it in a wash :angry-banghead: never been the same since. I've got a $30 waterproof one now, a bit more idiot proof :roll:

I've got the yellow one but mustn't have washed it properly and it's got a bit of mould :angry-banghead: don't know if I can clean it properly or have to get a new one. I was thinking of soaking it in some heads but don't know if that's enough?

Soak it in some napisan/sodium percarbonate i reakon would clean it up. Wouldnt submerge it though..
