35l plastic storage barrel/fermenter

Postby invisigoth » Wed Jul 10, 2019 2:32 pm

hi all :)

just thought you might be interested. when i was wandering through bunnings, a 35l plastic screw top storage barrel caught my eye.

it's food safe plastic, similar to a brew bucket only screw cap. i tested volume, it's 35l to the bottom of the screw top lid. i put a grommet and an air lock to see how it would go as a fermenter. despite not having a foam or rubber seal, it seals air tight.

figured it would be useful for 25l batches where you may need a bit more head room for foam :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ive got one of these too and they are great... fairly sturdy compared to the old cheapo bucket. I use mine mainly for mixing sugar with hot dunder/ backset before watering down with cold water and pouring into the fermenter.
They are a good bucket to get the paint stirrer and drill into to give things a good mix and aerate.

Just on that original bucket, I have one I use for dog food and one of the handles just broke. Would be a horrible mess if it was full of a wash...

Just digging this up because Ive also had issues with these sealing . The way that they stack ruins the lip of the bucket, they are basically broken in the shop. I keep beeswax cappings in it and the damn ants get in.

I use a large blue 120l food grade barrel off eBay. $30 new. Think you can get 220l ones for not much more.

So useful because my turbo washes often foam and need lots of head room. Can easily ferment 80-100l in the 120 barrel.

Drilled and installed a tap. Never bothered with an airlock as it makes the washes foam like crazy.

The bunnings ones i wouldnt recommend for perfect sterile contaiment of a wash because, as said above, they dont seal properly. For rum backset that you want to get funky however they are perfect for different exposure to different bacteria whilst keeping insects out (mostly) if you screw the cap down.

I have three of these and did the same with airlock bungs and a wash of my previously fermented Muscat Grapes. Too good to throw away.

I've got 4 of them, but I don't use air locks I open air ferment.
They are particularly useful when doing rice based mashes.
