Still Elements

Postby law-of-ohms » Wed Jun 06, 2012 3:11 pm

Just thought I would post about my experiance with getting a cutom still element made.

Rob at ROMAR ( http://www.romarelements.com.au/ ) helped me out heaps.

He is making me a custom 3600w element ( two 1800W elements in a 1"BSP fitting) so I can run in series / parralel.

Very helpful and being straight from the manufacturer its priced well.

If you need an element, I highly recommend giving him a call.

Looks like a well made unit, should give a lot of trouble free service.
What's the dimensions-Length & fitting?
Ball park $$?
Being a custom made, fit for purpose element it would be expected to cost a bit of a premium which needs to be weighed up.

For a custom element $80 is a bargain. Let us know how it performs & how you set it up - separate 1800 watt switchable or single 3,600 watt.

Fantastic! Been running for a couple of hours now,

Took ~40mins to bring 30L of low wines up to boil.

running at around 10L per hour.

No charring, when I running my last 3600W element, it was a "high density" element and on full power it would 'char' the mash causing off flavors.

Hi mate,

Just wondering what sort of boiler you used for this bad boy. Was just curious if you used a keg or not because I'm picking my brain how you could have bolted her into the keg with the thread and nut on the inside... :?

Regards,

Mitch.

Usually a socket would be welded into the side of a keg and the element screwed into that

Hi Law,

Is this element still going great? It seems to be a very good option.

Forgive my noobness, but would you be able to soft solder the 1" socket into the side of the keg, (i dont have access to a welder or know anyone that has one) and if I could soft solder it, would it hold well?

I wouldn't trust soft solder on an element socket

With the soft solder I have it should be fine, you would have to make sure its and interference fit.

you are not limited to 1" bsp fittings.... give the guy a call... he makes everyone of them custom and by hand! ( I've seen the workshop!)

I agree with law-of-ohms. Rob does great work and he can make to your specifications. He built me a 2400W element with a 1 1/2 BSP thread. Got my fittings from Midway Metals in Dandenong.
