MAPP Gas torch and cylinders

Postby reknaw » Sun May 01, 2011 2:12 pm

Anyone know a good place to find MAPP torches and cylinders? Bunnings is expensive as hell but good for convienience sake there has to be a place to get cheap cylinders and cheaper torches?

Used one thismorning for the first time - SOOOOOOO much easier than working with stainless.

Hi Spud,
I don't know if you've got Galvins Plumbing over there, coz I just got a MAPP gas cylinder for $19.95.
Bunnings here only sell the Bernzomatic ones, they are about $30 and don't burn as hot.
Other than that, you could try some HVAC suppliers. ;)

Thanks for that Kimbo, I'll do a search for them. Yeah being $30.00 at bunnings doesn't suprise me, the buggers are expensive. You have given me an idea, Maheel put me onto polyair for copper pipe I might check them out for MAPP gas as well :)

I got my mapp torch from bunnings, they're exy pricks.... try tradelink, there's also a map/oxy set for around the same price and they're a lot hotter than just mapp.

Mine is the TS8000 and it really struggles on 4" so if your thinking of soldering larger stuff I would go the TS8000 minimum or even the mapp/oxy mini set that takes the same size bottle.

For the smaller delicate solder jobs I just use a small propane torch that was $25 from bunnings, the bottle lasts forever and saves a lot on mapp gas.

Cheers.

Hi 8 ball,

Where I'm at Bunnings are $36 for a bottle and Mitre10 is $29, I guess it pays to shop around a bit.

Same for the Bernzomatic solder, bunnings want $24 in town but my local redneck hillbilly joint it's only $19 a roll

So now I go get a roll of solder and a gas bottle and stop in the pub next door for 2 schooners

Cheers.

I hate buying something for say $100.00 bucks for example then seeing it a week later for $75.00 somewhere else so I really look around beofre buying anyting.

8 ball with your solder you don't want "normal" solder that has lead in it. You want lead free solder i.e silver solder, there are different types of silver solder, Mcstill will be the person to tell you about different solders. He has done a lot of still building.

Most of the time I use the soft silver solder rolls, unless it's structural then I use the hard solder rods.

When searching for an ideal silver solder I learned that you should also ensure that the solder is cadmium free. This is a link to a UK data sheet about the dangers of cadmium containing solder:-

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/eis31.pdf

I use a lead, cadmium and zinc free silver solder from a mob called Quantec Solutions. It's a bit of overkill but I don't make stills all that often so I don't mind using the good gear. Theres a thread on these rods in the Distillers Warehouse.'

Cheers, Heffers

http://www.alltoolsqld.com.au/ Have Bernzomatic bottles for $16.00..........and are apparently prepared to post.

I took printed details to the local Bunnings and they reluctantly matched the pricing on the bottles and TS8000 kit less their advertised 10%.

I am positive they won't be able to post the cylinders, flammable gas is classed as dangerous goods. Australia Post will not accept DG.

Good find, I am off to Bunnings to get a couple of bottles and the TS8000 (won't be telling the wife that though) ;)

When you buy the TS8000 does it come with a free bottle? (yes I am a tight bastard)

edit, they won't post they'll use a freight company - I am an idiot......

Rang Bunnings before going to pick it up, talk about backpeddle.......

"But that price doesn't include freight" - well I can go and pick it up and then I don't have to pay freight, they are a shop........

"Is it the same model though?" - yes it is check their website.........

"Do you have it printed out?" no it's on the website do you have the internet I can give you the www.address......

"I'll have to check with the manager" ......

Eventually got it, $135 for the TS 8000 with bottle, then an extra bottle :D saving of $30.00 thanks histring.

I just thought of something - the fuckers didn't give me the 10% price garantee discount............

I got a TS 8000 from Amazon. For $71 delivered to Melbourne from US. :handgestures-thumbupleft: The store name is SupplyKick. I've been using it to make my bubbler and is great. I have got the gas from PS-coop for $12. I think this is the trade price as I bought my copper reducers at the same time.
