Supermarkets with Supplies

Postby fields » Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:28 pm

Hi,

I was trying to find the ingredients for a TPW and WPOSW from the supermarkets in the brisbane bayside and although coles and woolies have citric acid they are missing a bit.

After relenting and buying epsom salts and glycerine from a brew shop - stumbled across them both cheaper at the Tingalpa IGA yesterday,

Epsom Salts is $3.50 for 375g
Glycerine is $2.2 for 100ml

Am still on the lookout for DAP... please update if you have good sources of things like citric acid, calcium carbonate, gypsum, cheap cereals etc from supermarkets or other non brew shop sources

The Epsom salts can be a bit tricky to find in some super markets...its usually in the same section as tooth pastes and other bathroom stuff......or in the cleaning section

Woolies at Alex Hills has everything including the Epsom Salts in a 500gm box, thats where I got mine.
Edit to add: wife says it might not have been 500gm but it was a blue box

Sometimes things just aren't where you might expect to find them in the supermarket too - at my local Woolies the glycerine is in the same section as cotton balls and band-aids (I think one of it's uses is healing cuts and burns), wheat germ is in with the breakfast cereal, sodium carbonate is next to Napisan, and I'm sure I've seen Epsom salts somewhere weird too. Hunt around.

The glycerine can be found in both the cooking section & the band-aid section in most super markets (woolies,supa-IGA, coles ect), but the band-aid section is three times the price, make sure you get from the cooking section near the essence & shit.

Well, there you go - so the moral of the story is that you can find more than you think, and that asking the staff for help is not necessarily going to give you the correct answer... now i'm just feeling stupid

FYI, DAP from redox is not stocked in brisbane but can be freighted but is sold by the 25kg bag

"An approx price for 1x25kg bag = $350 + GST"

Am looking for post from the other site and from grainandgrape who sell it in vic for $20 per kg... still waiting on post price for that too

You should be able to get small quantaties of DAP from the dreaded brew shops, it is sold as a yeast nutrient I think mainly for wine making and restarting stuck ferments. This may be a cheaper option to start with.

Yeast Nutrient (90gm) $7.50
Also in 450gm packs for $24.90. To order just select 5 items.
A blend of nutrients formulated to increase yeast activity,
so that attenuation can be reached more rapidly

DESCRIPTION
A blend of yeast nutrients formulated to increase yeast activity during fermentation, so that attenuation can be reached more rapidly and the fermentation cycle shortened. This shortening of the lag phase can help to reduce off-flavours in beer that are due to bacteriological contamination. Yeast Food can cause a reduction in the final gravity by invigorating the yeast and enabling it to give a more complete fermentation. This can reduce the diacetyl content in the finished beer.

The blend contains nutrients and minerals which include:
Zinc
Phosphorous
Potassium
Manganese.

PROPERTIES
Form Free flowing, hygroscopic powder
Colour Light Tan
Solubility Completely miscible in water
pH A 5% solution will have a pH of 7.0-9.0

APPROVAL FOR USE IN BREWING
The ingredients contained in Yeast Food are approved for use in brewing and are listed in the United States Brewers Association, Inc. publication, “Adjunct Reference Manual”.

I like to rub some around the mouth of my bottles, then when someone licks their lips after having some of my rum they get a nice sweet taste.
