Hi Guys,
I have been a member for a couple of weeks now and been reading the shite loads of great info on here (insert JOB WELL DONE) but this is my first official post.

i found a stainless steel keg on ebay for $129.99 plus $20.00 delivery but it had a hole cutout in the side at the bottom for an electric element, as i didn't want the hole and the user id was listed as a brew supplies i email and asked if they could do one without the hole, they told me no not at the moment but gave me a link to a website to buy secondhand kegs, this place has a retail price list and list 50L second hand keg as being $95-$120 depnding on condition and they have resellers all over Aus.

ebay link : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/220866498899?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_4985wt_1187

John

P.S also found these brass gate valves on ebay : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/170673437798 ... _500wt_922

Hi 4runnin,

Brass is OK for small fittings as long as you pickle it every few months to get rid of surface lead, but I wouldn't use a brass valve. Drop the extra coin on lead-free brass or stainless steel, you only need to buy it once remember ;) :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Keep an eye on eBay, you should be able to pick a keg up for heaps less than that, I think I paid about $60 for mine. Or you could try your local scrap yard, they're not supposed to sell them but plenty do

Cheers

Hey John, you might want to fill in your profile as somebody here thats local to you might be able to help you out.
We dont need to know your address just a state or area would be good.
$100+ for a keg is stupid, dont do it.

Thx for the replies guy's i am looking around just thought it was good info on the kegs for people that get desperate (which maybe me if i have everything else ready and still haven't found a keg) to get one.

edited to add: the second hand ones from kegking have the spears already removed :D (going on some of the probs you guy's have had removing them maybe $100 is not so bad of a price. lol)

I wouldn't sweat on using brass ball valves in the boiler. Any minor traces of lead are not going to float up with the vapour, and you won't be drinking what's in the boiler.

hi mate I'd keep an eye on ebay they can go for between $30 to around $60. Also ask your local publican or mate who works at a pub. In the meantime if you are looking for storage vessels get some 5 litre demijohns from your local home brew shop for around $16 each.

this mob in Sydney might have some kegs for sale

http://www.thelocal.com.au/SYD/

they often sell off the empty kegs of the beer they bring in from overseas as it cost to much $$$ to send them home empty.
they have offered them to home brewers in the past for about $50 i think

call through the week and explain your a home brewer looking for kegs :)

just check they are SS as some they get are ally (and also the rubber coated ones)

Agreed!

I've been using a brass valve on my keg boiler for as long as I care to remember, but then if you want piece of mind a 1/2 inch SS ball valve is pretty cheap anyway.

Picked up an 18 Gallon and a 50L keg today. $50 each. The bloke had another 18 Gallon there but it wasn't in the best shape.

Jealous. Mine's a good aging vessel but few too many taps and weird outlets on it for boiler construction.

Mines a tad aged itself, but no major dents and no extra holes... It'll end up with a 6" still port, 3 or 4" fill port, 1" drain and 2 x 2" element ports :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Even a fairly rough keg comes up OK if you give it a sand, but don't try polishing it.

Keg rough sanded a.JPG

I sanded this one with a 40grit flap disc.
Needs some more work with a120grit, but came up OK.

It has a few good size dents in it, but the sanding disguises that.
