Any recommendations for tig welding in Sydney (near Botany)

Hi,

I'm looking for someone to cut some holes and weld some ferrules on to a keg.

Anyone have a recommendation?

One place quoted me $70-150 to cut a hole and weld on a 4inch ferrule. Am I wrong in thinking that is pretty steep?

Somewhere in the Botany or Rockdale area would be convenient.

Cheers,

tenorbrew

Buying the tig is the cheap part, pay for the gas plus bottle rental is where it gets ya.

What you have to remember is you will be paying by the hour and most businesses now days are all $70 an hour and up and most have a 1 hour minimum charge. So with that in mind it is at least 1 hours work to cut that hole and put a ferrel on so it is most likely a "fair" price. If you can find a friend of a friend that knows how to do it then you might be able to get it cheaper or work out a deal.

Good luck mate :handgestures-thumbupleft:

A cheap tig is $270 on ebay, seems a bit more than the quoted price.
Not to mention the sundry expenses of gas, electrodes, filler wire and such.

If you build your rig right you will only need to build once, may seem steep but if anything goes wrong you can take it back and they can fix it ;-)

Tig welding is F-ing hard, I spent 2 hrs at my mates workshop with his expert advice and couldn't get a good enough weld for a 100% pin prick free seal. And I'm not too shabby on a mig or stick welder. Tig is a whole other ballgame. Like Sam said, build it well and once and a few dollars spent today will soon be forgotten tomorrow

I've had a quick go with a TIG for work a few times, it is definitely an art that's for sure.
The expensive machines are worth their weight in gold.

Thanks for the input guys.

Will leave it up to the professionals, I think.

No recommendations on where, then?

Will keep getting quotes, I guess.

You could try a stainless steel fabrication company
Might not be the cheapest but they will do a good job.

Get it done once properly and it will see you right for the rest of your journey. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

To answer my own question and help anyone else in Sydney looking for a welder, ABM Engineering in Austral did a lovely job plasma cutting, tig welding and pickling my "homebrew boiler". At $170 he was also the cheapest quote I got.
