If you go down to your nearest bunnings you can pick up a good grade 30 litre water container for $26 ... I have four of them and don't use the taps. I use cling wrap I've the top so I can keep it airtight but still see what's happening and then just siphon out ... Most recipes mean the grain/lees will be over the tap anyways

Thanks for the tip. Silly question but Do you just siphon it out with a hose? Always used a tap so never done it that way

Just my opinion but i hate to siphon. Mouthfull of rum wash at 6 am aint my idea of fun :puke-huge: I ferment off the grain and use a tap connected to a pump to transfer to boiler. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I just got some silicone syphoning hose and I haven't got a mouthful of wash yet. I find one hard suck is enough to get it flowing without it getting anywhere near my mouth :teasing-neener:

Fair enough Sam ... Is there an obvious benefit to this? I assume you are just checking it is dry and not vinegary? I do the sniff test and always chuck the hydrometer in to make sure it has fermented out... Maybe I should start tasting! :obscene-drinkingdrunk:

It's one of things that once you have tasted it once you won't forget, like tails and heads for example.

Best description would be a sour/vinegar nasty taste.

You will generally see an infection as well on the surface. Next time you do a wash out a litre in a jug and leave it out in the open without any yeast it will probably get an infection.

I submerge the hose fully into the wash making sure it has no air in it then stick my thumb over the end and pull the full hose over to the boiler.
I don't suck....ask anybody! :))
