Dry malt

Postby Muppet » Sun Jan 05, 2014 11:38 am

I've made the mistake of asking the missus to pick up some malt while she was in town. Intended for my macwhisky. She returned with a bag of dry malt for beer brewing. Most beer guys would be familiar with this stuff, looks like it has dextrose/ sugar through it. I'm really not familiar with this stuff have no idea how much sugar it would contain or what else it's mixed with. Can anyone please inform me, is there something I could try use it in? Any info would be appreciated

There's all sorts of DME what brand/type is it?
One of the beer guru's should then be able to advise.
At its simplest dry malt is just dried malt extract.
No sugar or other nastys but some brew enhancer dry malts have all sorts of extras, so some more info will help with answering your questions
If its just the plain dried malt type extract it will go a treat in any whiskey bourbon type wash or beer

Thanks kiwi, this one is a brew mart light dry malt, package says adds flavor, improves body and mouthfeel, excellent for boosting gravity and yeast propagation. It looks like there's a sugar mixed, more sugar than malt I would say. Sorry but that's all the info I have

Dry malt

I use that stuff for my starters. Usually it's a ratio of 100gm of DME to 1 litre of water and that will give you a SG of about 1.040. Hope that helps. I would definately use it in a macwhiskey - if it's super light it won't add inch flavour but won't harm it either. It's basically the dry version of the light sticky crap in the cans.

Thanks wedwards, the website says use as a substitute to sugar so I might just drop 1kg of sugar and put this in. Wats the worst that can happen ;)

From Brew Shart..

TYPICAL ANALYSIS: Solids 97%, Fermentability 80%, INGREDIENTS: Brewers Base Malt, Carapils Malt, Water, STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE: Unopened bags best if used within 24 months from date of manufacture. Store in a cool, dry location. Product is hygroscopic. CHARACTERISTICS: (Powder) is a dry, 100% pure malted barley extract made from 100% malts and water.

Obviously its total crap so post it to me and I will dispose of it safely 8-}
