Cider tastes like beer

Postby fizzydrink » Tue Dec 08, 2015 9:21 am

Hey all.. not having a good run lately lol

I put down a mangrove jack apple cider and i thought id have a taste after a week of being bottled.

It tastes very beer-y. Which really means it tastes like crap. The apple taste is there and when i tasted it before bottling it tasted like a cider.. think 5 seeds. Now it just tastes like shit.
When i made it, i prob put a bit too much sugar in it..maybe 1.2kg all up.And after bottling, it hasn't carbonated either. ..
Ita my first go at brew like this so wasnt expecting much. Any ideas for next time?

Cheers

Just put down my 3rd cider the other day,Black Rock 2Kg sugar 6 litres of Coles apple juice to make 25 Litres and there yeast packet........................
Don't think of drinking for at least 8 weeks but 12 and longer is better............

My other cider was 25 liters of apple juice 500g lactose and 4Kg sugar , used 28g EC1118 yeast this was 12.9%ABV ..........
So watered it down to 6% 8% and 10% and it worked out at 33centc per 330ml bottle...................
Now after a few weeks in the bottle tasted bad but most of all smelt bad , but after 12 weeks it was GREAT no smell...............

So with all our cider, beer and spirits
GIVE IT TIME TO MATURE

NB prime with about 125g of white sugar per 10 Litres

Hey

I used a mangrove jack apple cider pack and used the yeast etc that came with it.
Put about 1.1kg of dextrose into 23l of water and it had stopped bubbli g at about 7 days with the sg recommend in the pack. .
1.002 off top if my head.

Had a taste then and it had that 5 seeds taste. Bit tart, but drinkable. Put about 650ml into coopers pet bottles with 1 carbonating drop.
Only leftnit for a weeknin the fridge before tasting. And it was crap. Expect it to get better with age. But thought it might have been a littke drinkable.
Ill justbwaitnit out for now...

Cheers!

Did you add the carbonation drop to the bottle and put it straight into the fridge? Because your cider wont age well in the fridge, nor will the yeast work to carbonate the cider...

If the cider doesn't work out you can always turn it into apple brandy

Also, I reckon you'd want two of the mj's carbonation drops in a bottle that size. One is good for stubbies :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'm no cider expert (2 out of 3 ciders I've made has gone through the still :teasing-tease: ), but I would say wait at least a month after bottling before giving it a taste, my understanding is cider does take some time to mature. Also maddog is right if you used 1 carbonation drop per bottle that size it will not be very carbonated, but that shouldn't affect the taste... Just the amount of bubbles!
