Wondering if anyone knows where to buy black pipe(mild steel ungalvanised) in gympie sunshine coast area. Looking for pre cut lengths of pipe pre threaded and fittings elbows nipples etc..Building an "ugly drum smoker" and need some for my air intake and chimney..
Thought blackwoods had it but seems they only sell galvanised as does my local steel supplier budget steel..

What size do you need?
You might have a hard time getting lengths over 150mm and bigger than 25mm NB.

Can try ringing up local metal fabrication shops and seeing if they sell small offcuts.

dang nab it was hoping somewhere would have pre cut and threaded pipe and elbows.
i have a standard drum bung 2"? in bottom of drum wanted to put an elbow straight in there and a riser 500mm ish then a gate valve then a short bit 100ish with some sort rain hat. In lid just wanted short bit 300ish with rain hat. Dont want to use galvanised and would have to sell a kidney to use stainless..

Since it isnt going int a still, how about some stainless exhaust pipe? not sure if you can get non aluiminised steel exhaust any more. If it dosent need taking apart, forget the 1.5 bsp thread and weld straight to the drum?

So fired the smoker up. Using lump charcoal single 1.5 inlet 2" outlet through 400mm chimney. gate valve on inlet no control on outlet(i did put stainless mesh over chimney to stop embers) thing is like an electric oven very responsive less than 10min to see difference between adjustments.Wacked couple snags in while i mess around on maiden run. Smoke gets hectic while fat drips on fire sat a pizza pan directly on fire box smoke dissapeared back to thin blue smoke and temp unaffected. I just know im gunna love this. About 10° difference between shelf heights.
Amount valve is open for top rack to run at 120c

I don’t know if it can technically be UGLY if it’s SS.
It looks sweet!
Just remember, like whisky, less smoke is more.
Not everyone likes Islay peats. :)

Good looking offset you have there. What sort? Was very nearly going to go offset but didnt want to spend heaps time(hourly) attend the fire. U.d.s goes for hours on few handfuls of charcoal without doing anything.. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks Bluc, the offset is a Hark Texas pro and, yes it is a bit of a mission when I cook on it.
It’s not too bad for ribs and snags but a big brisket takes all day.
I’ve been known to cheat and BBQ in advance and reheat by sous vide.
I also have an 18” Fornetto Basso bullet smoker that is almost set and forget.
:-D

Just started on sous vide also. Feel like Bit of a cheat but amazing results, sous vide then smoker to form crust and smoke flavour. Done pulled pork/pork ribs and beef ribs

Sous vide is fantastic.

I have done 30hour legs of lamb that just fall apart and large beef roasts (12-24hr) that are perfectly cooked to medium rare.

We have a vacuum sealer anyway as we run a beef farm and I use an old esky with the lid off and broccoli box with a hole cut through it for the sous vide wand.

It ends up being more of a hassle to cook the veges than the meat. :)
