I think most just clear keg, not saying you have to follow though :handgestures-thumbupleft: I seem to remember someone saying further out pc is more stress on the column. I am actually working on this at moment and thoughts of doing same thing using a pipe bender but just clearing side of keg.. You can use any length pipe and place the bend anywhere along it but guessing you want the look of a wide sweeping bend. Also the wider the bend the lower the pc end of the bend will be. I think..

Ok, so copper pipe does bend ok in a pipe bender somewhat. I wonder if it would be better to aneal the pipe first?

It’s not like I want it way the fuck over there, I was thinking about 250-300mm from the column but was after a nice clean 90 without soldered joints, then easy flanges on each end.

Cant see why it wouldnt work not 100% sure but I think there is ways to lengthen radius's on pipe benders perhaps youtube can help. Not sure about annealing I have bent small pipe without annealing maybe someone that knows more can chime in..

Ifn I was gonna try that I would consider packing it full of beach sand and sealing the ends,I once took a piece of 2inch to an exhaust place to expand and found out very quickly that the pressure needed for copper was a lot less than steel tube and left with a over expanded slightly ofset job :angry-banghead: anyway maybe ifn it fails so what you could allways say ya had a crack tho and sell or swap it back at the scrappie with out to bigger loss.cheers hillzabilly ;-)

By packing the pipe with sand, is that to stop the pipe from collapsing and creasing?

Yeah the sand is there to stop the pipe flattening and maintain the diameter around the bend.

I've braised a little hook onto the output of my parrot to hang a length of 15mm copper with a 2" to 1" and 1" to 1/2" reducers braised onto the input to take the product well away from the gas burner. The funnel has a loop of 1/4" copper pipe braised to it to hang from the parrot.

Cheers fellas for the info. I’m going to have a shot at getting a sweeping 90 bent into one end. Off to the beach for some powdery sand and hopefully all will look nice & tidy by the end.

I’ll keep Westebergs in mind, I may go check out the other boat builder/repairers to.

All good, even an above average exhaust place that does stainless systems(wich never happened in my day)may be worth a snoop too, there was one down near the go cart bowling ally ,from what I can remember wich was over 20years ago.cheers hillzabilly :handgestures-thumbupleft:

White dry river sand is preferred for this job - its generally finer and packs tighter and if you decide to add some heat to help, dry sand wont give you a steam explosion.
It may be easier to do your flanges first to make packing/constraining the sand in there easier

New Year, new shed, new old welding bench, new tools, plenty of parts collected now ready for some homes. Got no excuses now, well it’s still school holidays so will have to go to the beach every other day we don’t go fishing. It sucks being the stay at home parent sometimes :teasing-neener:

Sun rising before 5 with the local birds waking me up well before I need, has given me some extra time to make a little progress. With just about it everything I need now arrived I’ve been able to start ticking jobs off the list.

I’ve fabricated up some pretty cool looking element covers. I picked up some $5 balustrade end caps that I modified to go over the fitting to be welded onto the keg and an insulated wiring port. Just need to drill & tap 2 holes in each to take some grub screws to hold the covers in place.

All the holes are cut and mocked up in place. Not to get all the fittings welded into place. Then once all the bits are welded on I’ll make the old girl a dress of heat wrap.

Hard soldering all the 1/4” rings is next so I can start finishing the easy flanges I started months ago. Stay posted, more to come soon.

NIce productive day today, after spending the morning down the beach fishing and watching the kids go mad, managed to get the avo by myself in the shed.

I put one of those useless skills I learnt at tech 20 years ago for the first time, panel beating. Never in my life had I done any panel work until I wanted to dish a piece of metal for the outlet spout of the PC. Not a bad effort using a mechanics hammer on the utes tow ball. The noise certainly annoyed the neighbours, only belted this piece of copper about a million times. Still needs a bit of touch up & trim to size, but has a nice little curve, just needs the spout and short piece with easy flange for attachment to the PC.

I’ve got the blockhead macked up and ready for soldering.

Easy flanges complete now on the packed section. Should I solder in a couple of 1/4” pipe pieces to stop the packing falling out?

Just wondering what my best option is for soldering the outlet to the blockhead, weather I should hard solder or soft solder it on?

With weight of pc hanging off the joint I would say hard solder. But I have read here some just soft solder..Depends how you have done the join I guess did you poke it through or fish eye it for a flush fit?
Packed section looks good wondering about holding the packing in myself on my build :-B

There's a photo of what i did in my packed section here viewtopic.php?f=36&t=6709&start=80#p119127

I reluctantly hard soldered my blockhead and it just reconfirmed why i use soft solder, dirty, hot, crap flowing, hard to tidy up etc etc. Hard would probably be better if your butt joining though just in case.

I’m thinking about soldering in the bottom of the packed section just up from the easy flange, 4 or 5 bits of 1/4” pipe as I’m going to use stainless scrubbers. But I’m open to suggestions. I’ve not found much in previous builds about what others have done.

I was going to butt join, as I may one day want the ability to put a basket in the block head for flavouring a rum. My original thought was to leave a lip on the inside, so the hole cut in the blockhead is smaller than the 2” pipe to give the pipe something bite too on both sides. But don’t know if to bother. Oh I’d love to have a TIG to be able to copper weld.

Woodduck, does the perf plate in your packed section restrict much vapour flow? And does it have any issues allowing fluid return down to the top plate?
