Uncle Bob's Build

Righto fellas, after countless hrs of researching, scrap yard visits and gathering the bits, I have finally made a start on my 4" blockhead. Like a most before me it's a mashup design of everyone elses.

For now it will be 4 plate, single 2" bubble cap.
4" RC 7x 3/4 tubes,
2" PC 5x 1/2 tubes.

And when I get around to it I'll make the packed section for neutrals.

This might take a while to build as I'm only home every second week. But so far I've got 5 modules ready for the easy flanges. (Btw ya reckon i could get away with just having press fit sight glass tubes :laughing-rolling: )

This is it for this weeks installment. Will get some more work done next weekend maybe :happy-partydance:

Nice, this might be a stupid question but how are you cutting the copper so nice and cleanly?

Cheers. We used a 76mm hole saw in drill press and jigged up the pipe to keep it still, plenty of cutting oil spray too. Then used a deburring tool to clean up.
To cut the 3" we pushed into the 4" scribed and used a coping saw to cut the curve.

Measure twice, cut once. It took ages to set up but really happy with how it turned out. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Home again so back in the shed. Not too much progress today but got the keg ready for welding.
Next to do is the RC, 120mm long with 7 x 3/4 tubes.
What sort of flow would I be looking at in full reflux with this specs?
Should I bother going 9 x 1/2?

Also for the guys that have built gin baskets, what length bulkheads did you go?

Couldn't find the right size holesaw so the angle grinder did a good enough job :laughing-rolling:

Looks good bob, did you allow enough space to get your tri clamps on and off? Because i double checked and still had to grind my fill port clamp down :angry-banghead:

I hope so  the ferrules are just sitting in there for now till I get a mate to tig them on. I'll double check with the clamps on but I reckon it should be good.

My RC has 19x 1/2" inners... The bigger the vapour path you have through your RC, the less the vapour speeds up going through it.

I've got 6x 1/2" in my 2" PC!

Shit, did you struggle getting pipes in and soldered?
How much water do you use in full reflux?

I hard soldered my inner tubes to the end plates, then soft soldered the plates into the shell.

I dunno, a trickle?

I would definitely use more than 7 or 9 1/2" inners.

viewtopic.php?f=36&t=9681&start=220#p174031

Apparently it's 15 inners, dunno where I got 19 from 8-}

Back home for the week and all i got done was anneal a bunch of pipe, scribed out plates and start on making some easy flanges.
Had a small camper gas burner that sits on top of a 9kg bottle, turns out she gets bloody hot when you wind up the pressure!
Really need to get a move on but seem to be spending too much time trying to perfect everything ~x(

Righto, after almost 2yrs hiatus this lockdown bullshit has finally kicked my butt into gear. Time to get onto all those half finish projects in the shed.
In that time I've moved house and have lost a whole lot of info and I've had to almost start again with measurements.
I guess this post should go into the fuck ups section... :angry-banghead:

Decided to get the gas out and solder some caps up, 2" bubble caps came out mint and was really happy with them. So decided while it's out why stop there? We'll in my haste and after a couple of beers I cut up some flat plate and capped the downcomers... or so I thought, they were cut for the uprisers :obscene-drinkingdrunk: x_x ~x(

I think some more research is in order before I start cutting or soldering anything else :laughing-rolling:
