Sounds like a lot of messing about!

You better be a tradie... right m thinking this will take quite a bit for of fabrication work ...

Thanks for the vote of confidence boys :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: my last one didn't turn out too bad, gotta keep pushing the envelope :handgestures-thumbupleft:

G'day Woody, I'm at the crossroads on my double boiler on whether to weld the 2 kegs or put a seal in then fabricate some tightening brackets so the 2 kegs can come part for cleaning or just doing a mash using one keg. With my setup the top of one keg is cut out with only about 40mm left on the side which looks like a good setup with the base cut off another keg so it is a direct heating path to the steam flow. I reckon I will go the seal route as tigging would mean the double boiler would be a single use and not modular for doing mash's in a one keg setup.

Cheers Bryan

Hey guys, there's been progress! Not much and pretty underwhelming but progress none the less :))

Made the first sightglass branch off last night and dry fitted it, looks ok :handgestures-thumbupleft: I've decided on 4" sightglasses with tri clamps, nice and easy.

Brain dump,

I'm after some advice and or discussion from all you very clever blokes out there :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've been tossing up ideas with this double boiler. Do I do it like Bushy and have the elements in the heating jacket or do I take advantage of a machine I have here that recalculates hot water through my extracting plant? This machine is deisel fired and can circulate water over 100 degs although it does return to a holding tank so it wont run much higher than that without issues. Although 110 may not be out of the question as the water should be back below 100 before it gets back to the holding tank. Would 100deg be hot enough? It would heat up eventually but would it be as slow as hell? I think if i was to go this way I would use a copper coil in the heating jacket and fill the rest of the void with glycol for better heat transfer. I could then use this same coil to crash chill by running cold water through it. The water heater can be set at any temp so it would be handy for mashing, set it at desired temp and it will run at that temp +/- 2 degs.

Any ideas/ thoughts welcomed. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

You lost me half way through that post but basically 100 deg would be more than enough, liquids under normal atmospheric pressure will reach their boiling point and stabilise until all the liquid is evaporated, in our case we have a mix of ethanol and water( and some other compounds). Ethanol as we know evaporates at 78 deg and water at 100. If you've got a double boiler that can reach 100 deg I'd say you're on a winner.

It's less about the temperature and more about the energy input.

I have no idea what you mean woodduck, maybe a diagram might help.

If you already have a system to recirculate water at a set temperature, id go with that personally.

What? It all makes perfect sence to me 8-} :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: I'll whip up a finger painting tonight to try explain it.

Thanks guys :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Still recon 6" sights on 6" would look better but the clamps are worth more than my house :laughing-rolling:

Not sure if it will help but here's a bit of a plan for the boiler. I'm not as clued up as you blokes with your computer drawing so had to scribble something by hand.

This is a cross section drawing so as if it’s been cut in half from top to bottom :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hope it makes sence now.

Sorry guys I should have drawn a inlet and out let on the copper coil (all the small circles in the drawing) that runs between the two skins. It will in effect be like the attached photo it will just be internal, heating the glycol that will inturn heat the mash/wash. The hot water that will run through the coil will be supplied by the hot water system I already have.

Don't see why it won't work? 100 degrees is 100 degrees, and if you've already got the equipment... I know what I'd be doing.

Woody, why have a double boiler at all? Why not just run the coil in the boiler? That gives all the advantages of a double boiler without the fabrication need?
Then fab up a 12" hole in the top of your boiler, bolted in with the coil attached. Lift it out to clean once in a blue moon. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Make a sick mash tun.

I like it, makes heaps of sense and would save a bulk load of time. It would even be more efficient since there's no need to transfer the heat through extra layers of metal and the glycol.

:text-+1: Like brendons burbon heating coil but through a sealed lid..being in direct contact would also make it faster? :-B
