A&O wrote:Woodduck, does the perf plate in your packed section restrict much vapour flow? And does it have any issues allowing fluid return down to the top plate?

Or any problem with it creating a bath

They're 5-6mm holes so they won't create a bath. I doubt it would restrict much, couldn't be any worse than your packing. Make the holes bigger if you want.

The holes in my FSD packed section look like 3mm, and I don’t think it causes a bath, no noticeable change in reflux rate when I ran it.

I had a cross of 3mm stainless rod (like a telescopic gun sight) tiged at the bottom of the packed section to retain packing ,I use copper mesh rolls tho,I did intend to make a plate with holes to drop in later ifn I needed, for other types of packing but I never ended up makeing one,as I use the packed section empty sometimes for stripping and wanted little to no restriction ,my opinion is ifn the holes are too small it could cause the packed section ta flood esspecially ifn ya useing a lot of power,or if you have overpacked the colomn.cheers hillzabilly ;-)

I flared the blockhead joins on both the 2" take off and the 4" pipe such that they had overlap of copper from both sides and used soft solder. Photo here
http://www.aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=10938#p188873

Forgive the ugly solder job.

The joint has about 10mm of overlap from both pieces so heaps of strength even though it's soft solder.

Please excuse my naivety DB, how did you flare the 4”? I’ve been thinking about how to do it for a couple of days and drawn a blank. There’s gotta be a trick I’m not seeing, but my fabrication experience is in shed building and race cars, so fabing a column is a huge learning experience that I’m enjoying so much.

Similar to how I flared my pipe ends. I used a bit of flat bar that had a 10 mm slot cut into it and slowly levered it out. I cut the hole smaller than it needed to be. You've gotta be careful that you don't lever it too fast as the copper tears. The 10 mm slot was wide enough to go over the copper. Most of the work was in forming up the flare to the right shape so that both pieces met correctly otherwise the solder wouldn't take. I also clamped the two pieces when soldering too to make sure any gaps were minimised.

Big sense of achievement. I have finally finished a piece of my bubbler. It’s only little & simple but something is finished finally. Here’s the end cap funnel spout, cleaned up on the wire brush. Just needs a citric bath then it’s usable. :-D

Yeah, back a few years me & a neighbour built a LH Torry with 400 Chevy that we got to high 8’s. Just handled like a bitch because of the short wheelbase and short wheely bars. After we had our fun with that one, I threw my hand at a speedway street sedan & demo cars. So looks have never been priority for me, has always been function first. Since kids, no more racing cars, so next build after the still is gonna be an old dodge Ute that I’ll fill full of batteries and convert to electric. Paint it pretty and put a nice interior to be a daily driver and charge it from the wall. Living in Albany don’t need more than 200km range. That’s the dream. Dreams make life worth living. :D

Thanks to Swede & Thelegion for the templates for my condensers.

I spent 15min last night blowing up to correct sizes for my 4” RC & 2” PC.

I cut out the templates & used one of the kids new glue sticks for school to glue onto the copper pieces I’m going to use. The Thelegion template although for his bubble plates in his glasser are perfect positions for my 7x 3/4 RC tubes.

Now to drill them out and get soldering.

In between miss 8 saying Daaad he’s being mean to me and mr 5 saying Daaad she’s not listening to me, I found enough time to drill the PC end caps and mock it up to make sure there’s enough space for all the 1/2” pipes in the 2” casing, all looking pretty good.
