I have read conflicting stories about the being the same and the single caps giving a lower abv. I'm thinking of making my own like you originally then maybe upgrading to fsd plates after if necessary. I could make my own multi bubbles plates but after all of the other work that goes in I think I will want to get it bubbling straight away, the multi bubbler plates require a lot mor work than the single cap

Very happy with new plates all things equal I went from 88-89abv with 2" caps to 93-94abv with multi caps. With long full reflux slower takeoff and packed section I should bd able to hit azeo for neutral runs.

Is that with a 25mm bath depth?
I wonder if another 10mm would help?
Did you notice any difference in power requirements?

I strip washes through 5 plates and then again for spirit run at around 2.1 to 2.3 l/hr and it works fine for very smooth vodka and gin. But I’m going to try a 90% turn with a detuned bubbler rig for strip and then a power controlled spirit run after seeing the Drs setup.

Not sure if I asked this but will ask anyway. I have 4 plates and 600mm packed section. I literally have 5mm from the top of still and the ceiling. For neutral should I leave it as is or sacrifice 100mm for a 5th plate. That would give me 5 plates and 500mm packed section...Would I get my benefit from 100mm packed section or a 5th plate. Hoping to have another crack at neutral in few weeks.. :D

I'm not sure where exactly it is, maybe in the calculations thread, but there is a calculator that takes measurements of your packed section and tells you the equivilent plates that it acts as. From memory, a 500mm long 4" paced section basically acts as around 7 plates so I think reducing it by 100mm and adding a plate will be much the same

They say packed section is better but I personally found plates better. I have 6 plates and 500mm packed. I did run 4 plates and 800mm packed section for a while but it just didn't seem to do it for me. I find with my current setup I get 96% at 2-2.5lph straight from wash no stripping. It may not be as good a product as some may get but I don't drink vodka as such I use my neutral for girly drinks. Some of my friends do drink it as vodka and no one has complained yet..

How about using the 5th plate and other packed section as a secondary column?
Use the tee at the bottom to return reflux to the primary column, possibly with a pipe from where the sight glass goes

Believe me I have considered a side by side, seen a few try and plumbing is a real headache.. :-B :handgestures-thumbdown:

Have you got any pics of the side by side type bluc? Sounds intresting, but I couldn’t find many examples.

Is there any reason the packed section has to be vertical? It it ran at 45° that would buy you some height back wouldn’t it?
