Cheersbigears wrote:Yes go for gold with one of these setups. If you have height trouble drop out a tee as I think the 500mm packed section works out to be around 20 plates. So taking one tee out one plate is not going to matter too much.

Thanks for the input. Lots to think about.

Looking at your set up in the shed
How have you set up your digital thermometers ?

Buy some 100mm 4 inch sections. Have a bubble tee at the bottom then 2 x 100mm sections with a bubble plate at each join. Make sure you have a bubble tee under the reflux condenser so that you can check for flooding. I can get 14 bubble plates without a shed extension this way.
As you are using a 500mm packed section you'll probably only need 3 x 100mm sections.

Thermowells welded above RC & parrot cup, then thermo probe on waterhose output from RC&PC, held on with amalgamating tape.

Professor Green wrote:I know the 50 litre milk can is a little shorter than my 100 litre one but I think you'll struggle to fit a full neutraliser into 2400mm even with a blockhead. All is not lost though. I run mine with 4 plates and strip my wash first. My current strategy is to strip 2 x 90 litre washes using a 4" pot setup then, combine the low wines and then run them though 4 plates with packed section.

My column set up is as follows (top down)

Blockhead (5 x 2 Tee)
RC
Packed section
SG Tee
SG Tee
SG Tee
SG Tee
100mm TC pipe (with recess for the bubble plate)
100 milk can
Bunnings dolly (approx 100mm high)

This all fits into my 2400mm shed with 5mm to spare. The reason for the dolly is to get the bottom of the drain tap high enough off the ground to be useful.

I have to say the neutraliser is the muts nuts and if you're considering one but are worried about the height, go with a similar configuration and run strategy to mine and you will not be disappointed.

Hope this helps you out Ned.

Just received my still from 5SD. Fantastic quality and service by Andrew. Just need to do a cleaning run and I am off and running.
Had to install a small electric winch in the shed with the wire coming down inside the brewing room.
Only got about 75mm to spare.
Identical to Professor Green's
:text-thankyoublue: Everyone who had input. Very happy.
p.s. That piece of rope will not stay there once I start distilling. Just in case anyone asks %-(

If you assembled the tee's and plates by putting the last one upside down on the bench, with recess up then fit the plate downcomer up and seal then the next tee and clamp ,until your last plate (wich will actually be the first) wich will then be topped by the boiler top, then flip the whole lot over and clamp down to the boiler. This will remove the need for the 100mm section and may just allow a 5th plate.cheers hillzabilly ;-)
