This is my thump tower I'm still finishing, but pretty much ready for a cleaning run.

3 plate thumper, progressively smaller liquid volume on each plate. Bottom plate holds 200 mm of liquid, middle hold 150 mm and the top holds 100. The drains are external with a top drain to the bottom plate. The dephleg has 3 adjustments, off, 0-50% reflux and 50-100% reflux. Yet to build is a vapor basket for the boiler and a gin basket for above the deplegamator.

What no peachy keen?

For some reason, I'm rally warming to the external drains. I don't have any experience with them, but I reckon they are better at negating vapor bypass, at least in a perf plate design, but I guess they are a necessity with a thumper column.

I was experimenting with thumpers and having problems with vapor bypass after liberating the bulk of the alcohol from the wash, so I made a larger trap, different configuration, with no luck. After fretting I changed to a external drains and the problem disappeared. I also like the option to fill the trap external prior to a run. The drain on the top to bottom plate is valved so I can bypass it.

Vapor bypass?
Liberating bulk?
External drains?
Larger trap?

*sigh*

Man I have no idea what these terms mean:(

As a brewer I'm pretty used to insider lingo but wha? Huh? Who?

Distilling is a whole new insider terminology...

Vapor bypass?Vapor going through the drain and onto the next plate rendering the plate or tray useless
Liberating bulk?Removing the majority of the alcohol from the wash and retaining it durring reflux in the column or thumpers
External drains?Plates/trays/thumpers need a way to cycle the alcohol back down the column while vapor mingles with the liquid, reflux
Larger trap?Vapor lock just like under your sink or in your toilet, prevents vapor bypass

*sigh*
