4"boka or another bubble plate coloum

Postby Rock » Mon Jul 15, 2019 4:39 pm

Well looks like I will be doing a build thread soon, as i already have a 5Star neutralizer, around 5 year's old and i aquired it a year ago, and it's still preforms and looks great.
I came upon a bargain today,

1 x 2mtr length unused 4 " left over from a fire hydrant, and 900 mm of 3 " also $70.
Bargin, so I don't know what to do with it, like alot of other still build ,I've got fairly average solder skills but can weld and stuff so should get through.
Decision, i think I'm gunna go with Bokabob, as i dont have one or should i do a cvcm stil and build the Carter head.
I never really fast into things so I'll mull over it for a bit.
How much power do you rekon i need to run to keep it running in boka mode ?. I've only got 50 lt keg boiler with 2 x 2400w elements with one power control.
Looking to hear what people who have more than one ,do they think they made the right decision on second buy/build?

Gin vodka and maceration a ccvm and a carter head will see you good. And you will also be able to make brown spirits in pot mode.. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Well, 1st up is rum for me, then ujssm varieties ,straight corn and about to add some rye . I have done the Tffv , Tpw . For vodkas through the he copper mesh packed section.
Realistic i probably should just build add ons for what I have . Like the Carter head for the few bottles i would drink , daughter in law has a love with gin .

A packed section (not sure if you have one or not)and carter head may be an option. Are you just trying to make better neutral by building a boka? Maybe you should look at doing a 100% wheat mash and run that through your neutralizer? Pretty big jump taste wise from sugar washs to all grain...

Yes have 500 mm with mesh rolls

and carter head may be an option.
It's sorta like if you can have alot of gun's or maybe alot of stills, many module's laying around.

Are you just trying to make better neutral by building a boka?

Will a boka mske better neutral ?

I was tossing up between a 4”boka and bubbler.
Glad I built the bubbler as it’s more versatile but am still thinking about a 4” boka.

But... Making a 4” boka would be dead simple and handy to have in your team, biggest drama would be finding enough packing.

Packing is cheap and easy. Two rolls of copper at the top and the rest of column fill with scoria @7 to 10mm. The big green shed has 7 to 14mm so buy two bags and pick out the smaller stuff, just give it a good wash before the first run and hold in full reflux at the beginning for 15mins longer than usual.
A 4in boka will produce a very good neutral and at a speed faster than you and all your friends can consume it!
As you already have a plated column you're not really going to improve anything buy building a second...

Thanks for your input.
I realize I already have the beeze knees with the 5 plates and packed.
I was going to build originally, so i got to make something , there's a gin/carter head and my brother could do with a 4 inch basic pot , so going to build something.
I really feel like a cheat not having to build anything as yet .
And there's heaps of more smaller size i can get iff the plumber neighbor, and offered his oxy set.
Grinning my grin off
