Gave it a go S/S to Copper last night and what a mess :angry-banghead: I think i must not have had enough heat in there :angry-banghead:
Will try again tomorrow more flux over the join, heat up slowly and feed the solder in to the join.

Hey mate, I've had success by first tinning the stainless very close to where the final join will be.

Get your stainless super-duper clean. Use a shitload of flux and apply the heat nice and slow. You'll get the solder to just melt and stick to the staino without burning the flux and dropping solder between your toes. (don't ask). Let it cool down and re clean it all. I used a wire brush and some emery with some acetone.

Clean and flux the copper and re-flux the staino. If you really gently heat the copper away from the join, you'll hopefully see the previously applied solder slowly melt and run into the joint. Add a little more if needed by gently dabbing the solder into the already molten pool. As soon as the joint is filled, take the heat away. Don't touch it or fuck with it in any way. Just let it cool down and then check your attempt at success.

Hope this helps mate. It worked for me with bernzo flux. :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I know how frustrating it can be mate  have you tried heating the stainless first and then the copper? Just to get some more heat into the stainless. I'm no expert but o know stainless will take longer to what anD hold heat longer.

Im no expert either Hil but have you tried a different flux. Ive read that Eziweld and Comweld 965 flux have been used with some success to join SS to CU?

Yeah tried another flux, esyflo which the douchbag at boc said was the same, it was better, I tried heating both the s/s and copper first on different runs, a few joins worked so something worked and I was too smashed at the end of the day to know which runs where better :)) I could tell its just technique so gunna keep trying

Bubble cap columns always hold a liquid bath.

still learning to run mine, is this not the case with bubble caps? not sure what my fascination with the caps is, i think because i saw them at both the commercial distilleries i toured.
next build is gonna be perf plates i think.

With bubble caps you always have a liquid bath, I've found that the lower sight glasses fog a little once the ABV starts to drop, and the output becomes erratic.

Perforated plates dry up once ABV starts to drop, then output slows until it basically stops.

Was talking to my plumbing mate last night telling him about my lack of success soldering, he is trying to tell me i need to heat up quickly and pour heaps of heat into the stainless :)) he is coming around tonight to "show me how its done" i'm gunna just let him go cause he get all the copper for nothing me but i'm guessing its not gunna work. :))

My guess is he'll warp the stainless before the solder sticks. ;-)

There is a thread from the other site that has some pretty good info on soldering both CU to CU and CU to SS.

Just thought it might be useful. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
