4" Rum still

Perforated & bubble cap plated columns

4" Rum still

Postby MacStill » Wed Nov 21, 2012 3:43 pm

Here's a sneak peak on another little rum still I'm working on.

IMG_0971.JPG

Details are:

3 x single bubble cap plates
3/4 x 1/2 inch reducer through the plate for adjustable down comers

The 3 plate designs are to give a full heavy flavored rum or whiskey, but being modular you could add any number of plates to suit your style of drink.

Having made and run bubblers over the years I believe with a little education and instruction anyone could run these things without sight glasses, it makes for a quicker & easier build that doesnt impact the wallet so hard.... :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Once this rig is complete and tested I'll be offering it up for sale.

Cheers.

Yes I think many of the bubbler makers have overlooked an entry level still that can be added on to as funds allow, it would be nice if I can offer a complete 4 plate still for under 1k so people can get amongst it with these things.

It will run very nicely but without peepers it will have to be monitored by temp and parrot readings, maybe not as schmick looking as ones with windows but it will still produce as good a quality product as the more expensive units.

Would certainly be a good opportunity for someone to buy them selves a lovely xmas present :D

I'm not real happy with the top heavy look it has so I'll be changing the reflux condenser to a 3" model that will be slightly taller, i'll use 4 x 3/4 tubes for the vapor path through the condenser then reduce down to 2" for the take off down to the product condenser.

Progress with it today has been great and I've got all the materials for the plate system cut ready to put together, I'll hopefully be able to post some pics of all the internals tomorrow.

Are these perfs?. The first time I ever saw one of these run it occurred to me that the only sight glass that mattered/helped was the bottom one, eg: seeing it load and seeing it dry up told ya exactly what was going on and when . I think the other sighties are more or less bling

Nah, its a single bubble cap on each plate. But your right about the sightglasses, you can operate one just fine without them but it is easier with them.
they really are just bling ;-)

Single bubble cap plates mate, same as the 6" rig just scaled down :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I dont think any windows are mandatory with temp and parrot monitoring, also the bubblers I've run always show signs of tails by the output becoming irregular ;-)

Got a bit of an update and some progress pics of this build for anyone interested :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Looking in from underneath the plate at the riser & cap on the downcomer

Here's the bottom of the the downcomer tube before it's cleaned up and the cup soldered on.

Looking at the plate and how it sits in sealed and clamped in between a couple of ferrules, this build will be using easy flanges tho

This is a great point, these look like a great rig at a great price. I think a lot of people find the price of a plated column beyond what they are willing to spend for a hobby.
Good work Mac :handgestures-thumbupleft:
