Ol' school bubbler build

Postby MacStill » Thu Dec 06, 2012 3:48 pm

I've definitely got the build bug going again with bubblers, here's one I'm doing that will resemble one of my earlier builds a couple of years ago.

This one will have the single bubble cap plate and downcomer system the same as the rum still is running, and will have 2" peepers x 5

Reflux condenser is 4" x 4" with 5 x 3/4" tubes and the product condenser is 2.5" with 5 x 1/2" tubes with the condenser shell being 350mm long, both condensers will be individually controlled by 1/2" gate valves.

Here's a stock standard reflux condenser.

And a mock up of the build, this one's gunna look tough when it's all complete :music-deathmetal:

Cheers. :D

Nice :D , the top looks like it could take a drop in defleg.
Are you doing that or the defleg in the pic :?:

Check this out mate, in short the bubbler is better than a pot and with enough plates or packing you can use it like a reflux, if anyone disagrees please put it in a different thread so this one doesn't get cluttered :handgestures-thumbupleft:

No drop in for this rig, this way is less work and easier to build the cooling lines for the same results :handgestures-thumbupleft:

OK so the plan has changed a little for this rig, it's now only going to be a 4 plater and the take off made in a more elegant fashion.

What way do you lot think the take off should go, like this or the first pic?

Just gotta do the plates & cooling.

No smart arse remarks about the sight glasses either :naughty:

definitely the first take off, the other just looks like a million others done Latley. That's just my opinion though.

Would the first one come out cheaper? It looks like you save on a reducer and an L.
EDIT: looks like you have to use a coupling sleeve and a cap in its place, so it comes out a wash?

After doing a stack of stripping runs Ive been dreaming of building my own bubbler. If I did, I would do it the cheapest way possible. However, I think the second way looks more elegant.

Side take off and drop in reflux condenser in the 3rd pic looks good viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1209#p14278

I dunno, maybe I should build one each way :-B

After thinking about it I reckon the 4" cap and extra 200mm of 4" pipe actually works out more $$$ just by a whisker.

I also changed the plate design for this rig, I know you will like them :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'll post pics of the perf plates tomorrow ;-)

I dunno.
The first one looks a bit "flat head ford"
The other looks a bit "double overhead cam"

The drop in condenser look is pretty cool old school. School with a "ch" not a "k", the young guys are all old skool now. I like the first one.

That's one of my fav stills, simple, I wouldn't go the drop in reflux, to many unattractive pipes hanging out the top. The still on this page, second pic, with the coolent lines hidden behind it would look so tidy and a real mans still :D .
