blues build

Perforated & bubble cap plated columns

Re: blues build

Done with a regular claw hammer. Pipe not annealed.
I started flaring the pipe, just hand held over the end of my wooden saw horse.
Once flared, placed onto a piece of steel BBQ plate to hammer to 90 degrees.

Time for an update...been a lack of progress due to heat.
Finally got sieve plates into a round state, that took some time.

On the soldering station today (BBQ :-) ) Reflux condensor, 180 bend into reducer;
Still to pressure test the product condensor
It aint pretty yet - got some filing and cleaning todo, still pretty rough with the soldering but improving.

Nice work bloke,

Solderings fine, they all look sexy once tubbed up in any case.

This looks like a pre easter finish with a couple runs already under the belt.

Update time...
Still chasing some pin-hole leaks in the PC & RC ... not fun
Worked on the sight glass mounts today.
Don't have hard solder, so soft soldered the rings together. They broke apart on flattening - doh.
Screw it, I soldered them on, bit of a gap, but reckon it won't matter. Tri-clamps don't meet all the way.

At least a fornight I'm guessing, till I get finished.

To cut fish mouths, use http://www.harderwoods.com/pipetemplate.php to give a template, wrap around pipe and mark.
Cut excess pipe away with snips, and I used a bench grinder to finish off.

One way I found was to cut it close to the correct curve with the dremel, then finish by wrapping 120grit sandpaper around the pipe you are fitting it to and scrub it on there til you have a very close fit.

Soldering a copper reducer to a stainless ferrule before, solder didn't really flow capillary action style into the joint. Seems to have stuck to the SS though and using EzyWeld 801 flux. Seem to remember seeing this problem mentioned before, can't remember the remedy.

Good stuff mate :handgestures-thumbupleft: , it's hard to see but it looks like you pee trap is connected from one side to the other?. it sounds like your ferrule isn't hot enough as it's sticking to it, I havnt used easy weld though.

Nah the trap is not connected, open at one end ... just an illusion with angle the picture taken at.

That's likely it, ferrule is a 2" going into a 4" reducer. Will heat it up again later.

Almost decision time on cutting 4" pipe. I've got 1600mm of 4".
Now I distill outside in the backyard on gas, so keeping to a stealthy height is a concern and ACT is cold in winter so heating a long column may be a concern.
My plate tree is approx 450mm top to bottom
Do I make the column say 550mm, and later make a removable rock section "bt1 style" which clamps in,
or make it say 800mm leaving room at top and fill my head space with rocks :)) sitting on the top plate.
Chime in guys...
