Howdy,

I'm going to have a crack at a newy for me a Glass column.

Ups include:
Not fitting fucking plate trees
Modular
Lower build cost..I bloody hope...
Simpler perf square plates..."yeh muppets" (thanks Crow) not wave form plates, LED lighting, mechanical valves etc etc etc either...winter for this one
Standard 6mm SS rod tensioners on plates outside column... i.e. outside the working guts rather than centre rod
Simpler assembly for anyone

Downs include:
Supply of borosilcate or Soda/Lime tube sections
Lantern globes don't "crack" ( bad pun) the mustard
Eliminates half the techo stuff I was going to do on a copper column

Done the homework, all keen bring on the cash flow...what this space.

This prelim is a bookmarker for the conceptual design head space time... You can avoid this lag by getting interested only once picies are posted, or start thinking about
your own glass column if you find 10 secs in your day free!...sry Googe to bugga up your day!

This will natualy include a glass case product condenser?

Maybe a spiral graham style condenser- like MR's?

Now, to think of a way to jazz up the reflux condenser....

now that would be cool EG :D

Yeah I did think at one stage about glass column as it eliminates the sight glasses :)) then I thought how many hydrometers, alcometers and beer bottles I broke and thought that it would cost me a fortune replacing the column every run :laughing-rolling:

Can't wait to see what you're cooking up.Go for it .You're not alone in this thinking.Just the practicalities of it putting me off.

Mac now's the time to post sizes of all those square sight glasses you got. I've been thinking on this for months too .Recon we could get rid of a few of them :handgestures-thumbupleft: Recon a few might get busted up in the trying but a glass sold is a glass sold :D

Hi BT1,

These Sight Glasses are found all over the net as they are Regular Sanitary Items, the one below is with clamp ends the same as regular ferrules, they come standard with the borosilicate glass. From memory i think they start from about USD $150.00 each for 4"

You could buy pyrex tube any length you wanted, it's not as exy as you'd expect.

One of those SG's mrs mac posted, 1M of pyrex and some brass booker rod would look sweet :happy-partydance:

Cheers all,

brass rod on copper...nice!

I'm sourcing the glass lenses only i.e. no metal frame ... stacked on plain perf plates is the idea.

Googe relax and get that damn 4" your working on finished ... then you can start on a glass one

So a spiral condenser that would be trick but I suspect she'll be copper

Gee Crow not a bite on the patented "muppets" line...

Again thanks

Crow dosn't hold the patent. We can all call you a muppet, if you want :teasing-tease:
Just say the word....

I think it would be nice to see a glass column with perf plates. Not too many been done like that. Caps have been done to death on these.
I guess the top and bottom plates could be a bit thicker than the rest?? Just from a thread tension point of veiw. If those two are strong, you could load all the glasses and seals as much as you need.

My SG supplier does pyrex/borosilicate tubing in various lengths, if you get stuck sing out and I'll get a cost price quote on it for you :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Re: Bt1 build blog V2 - Glass

Booker rod, Brooker rod, all-thread, threaded rod, all the same thing.
Just a long, contiuous bolt, with no head.

Brooker rod is usually 10mm, sometimes 8 or 12mm and is usually about 3m/10' long. Usually mild steel, zinc or gal plated. Quite cheap.

All-thread is usually about a meter long, and is available in nearly all metals (brass, SS, MS, etc) and thread types. Can work out more expensive.

yep Googe you got it,

just the 4 rods one in each corner with retaining nuts either side of each plate.

so its:
plate
gasket
glass
gasket
and so on.

Cheers EG, need to think that through a tad.
Mac appreciate your offer might need a call on it, I'll let you know.
