So is the issue the gasket sliding on the glass, or the gasket sliding on the copper plate? (I don't remember Harry being all that specific...)
Ether way, a possible fix could be to make up some thick washers, could be copper if desired.
Make the outside diameter of the washer to suit the diameter of the glass, and/or gasket and assemble with jamb nuts (nut each side of the plate)
If the threaded rod is too close to the corner, the exess washer could be trimmed for looks. They could be soldered in place and help make the plate stiffer.
My guess is the glass would bite into the gasket pretty good, but the gasket may move a little on the plate.
