KK,
enough thinking time ...building...aims are cheap, less technical, minimal soldering would suit a newb and of course lower cost.. Cost will be influenced by final glass choice gotta say so we'll test these latern replacement types first, give em a few runs see how they stand up.

Plates are slightly over sized for the glasses I'm testing but sized to suit a glass later on. Var is about 15mm and didn't want to make 2 sets of keg joiners and rock filtering final sections on top of column.

btw another downcomer version ... just for googe... smaller could be <20mm realistically but hey got the space so...

Has anyone experienced negative effects to using these shorter downcomers versus the pipe going down to the next plate..?

I suppose the difference is splashing the distillate onto the next plate as opposed to placing it...

Any thoughts/findings?

No. of holes, downcomer height, downcomer size, height above next plate, total column height, its all a big love fest. How you mix it up detirmines if you'll orgasm or not.

No dramas clamping the glass straight on, just dont do them up so tight they crack :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Borosilicate is pretty tough ;-)

Ah mac,

you noticed my preference for silver solder...a little charred copper is a good thing :D ...at least you know it flowed around the joint.

err
I doubt the initial set of glasses are borosilcate, most likely a soda-lime type if that even...depends on how they go might be crap... but someone has to test them.

Geez they are thin walled but I'm told/read thin is better for thermal shock...more physics I'm not on top of yet.... Given they are normally used for gas lanterns I expect no issues with heat as such and suspect even on a super cold day rapid temp changes due to wind/rain might be a furfie....consider they must get this in the intended use for camping anyway?

$11.95 @ BCF stores. These are the medium size...large could be used but overkill imho.

btw back drilled the underside plate with 2.5mm to get that theoretical venturi effect, but been thinking at the low vapour speeds we're dealing with it could just be bullshit... I guess we'll see! (pun intended)

Your temps are never going to excede around 95' anyway so structural integrity might be the first focus here, always a drama when dealing with a strata like glass. If you knew the max safe downward pressure then a tension wrench would be the go to tool here but I bet there is no data on that .
You could sacrifice one and crush it between two plates using threaded rod and a tension wrench ;-)

cheers Crow,

tension wrench good idea...

here's a rough mock up for the build so far...

Another thing Bt1 Harry amongst others have reported a problem with the glass slipping and drifting of centre, definitely not something you want to happen mid run . Now these guys were fixing this by soldering a ring both sides of each plate just larger than the glass (lots of work and pretty ugly), I wouldn't do this. Here what I would suggest : Partly drill in 4 ss self tappers though the plates so they would be opposite each other and just outside the tube, then when there is an equal amount of thread each side of the plate (say 5 mm) cut the screw head off. Jobs done for both sides and Bobs ya aunties live in lover :handgestures-thumbupleft:

yeh saw that fix posted elsewhere,

given may have 2 glass sizes might need to spend a bit of time thinking on this...initial ws a copper heavy wire L shaped pin to take up current position but could be used also for larger glass sizes if used.

something to consider on the bus am today.

copper weir could do it but kinda defeats the glass viability up too a point .

Out of interest, how thick are the walls of these glass tubes ?

Yep, by Me :D , different tube sizes? can I ask why you would do that, either way make sure what ever retainer you go with is used on the outside of the tube not the inside as copper expands a lot more than glass ;-)
