had considered a gasketted up temp if needed on a heavy gauge wire wier type but hoping to have a minimalist...type look to it...

Nice idea Mac, is that off something you've built or is it just a "here's one I prepared earlier" :)) . I was thinking along the same lines, using a very small slice of tube, a ring so to speak, say 1~2mm thick, would be hardly recognizable. Hope you don't mind me thinking out loud bt 8-} .

Howdy,

I've kinda settled on an idea for the locating pins on the plate to retain the glass and gasket.

Just to recap there's a possibility may need to change to larger glasses if these thin walled lantern replacement glasses fail.

Don't wish to introduce another metal with different thermal properties and variable expansion issues so staying with copper.

The pins will be located next to gasket seat, pin being a through and through on both sides of the plate. The offset would/should equal the gasket thickness so a small gasket piece would sit snug against the glass wall. Pins expand at same rate as plate, can be machined off with dremel clone if larger glasses are required.

So is the issue the gasket sliding on the glass, or the gasket sliding on the copper plate? (I don't remember Harry being all that specific...)

Ether way, a possible fix could be to make up some thick washers, could be copper if desired.
Make the outside diameter of the washer to suit the diameter of the glass, and/or gasket and assemble with jamb nuts (nut each side of the plate)
If the threaded rod is too close to the corner, the exess washer could be trimmed for looks. They could be soldered in place and help make the plate stiffer.

My guess is the glass would bite into the gasket pretty good, but the gasket may move a little on the plate.

Now that googe is free to build his glasser,

Lots of background boring stuff done, SS ferules to copper, 14 gaskets cut, more wire brush work, followed by more wire brush work, finished off with more wire brush work and 3 coats of ceramic clears.

Gone for a new external finish type instead of mirror.. guess ... yep brushed!

Got a pleasant task...not.. of drilling hundreds of 1.5mm perfs and back drilling all with a 2.5mm tomorrow and 2 runs to do on the 6 plater...

Good time to get mellow out, shorts on, think about the googe MK6 downcomer (btw snuck MK 5 in as minor revision), plate reinforcing, wire bracing systems and Oops nearly forgot another 10 chapters of the meaning of life...after lunch.... I wish!

Done late Sunday I reckon...

I'm gunna try for 15 broken drill bits this time.
I was thinking of just buying a packet of holes, like the coyote from the road runner had, then just throw them on there.
Ahhh, saturday, drilling holes. It dosn't get much better than that.

tried a water jet but my lawn sprinkler don't cut it (bad pun intended)

EG this is a bit of an odd fix but hey it works! laugh now if you like......but needed a fix so....

using a drill rested on of all things a pair of thick car wash sponges I kid you not, which takes nearly all the weight off, seem to get through plenty of plates before I loose a bit...last two where blunt so they got binned b4 they broke.

Ah plates are all drilled and ready..

5 plates not one single broken bit 2 chucked as they where blunt as however......and I get to sit down while I'm doing it...bonus +1 for hand drills I guess.

Just curious to know whether you are using one of your mongo burners to test this rig out.
I can't help but think if one of those glass lenses were to crack mid-run, you'll end up hotter than the Honda in your avatar.:violence-torch: My guess is it would be like dumping a few litres from a jerry onto your lit burner. ...

Hey bt1,
I'm kinda worried a bit about what your building here mate. Can I suggest a couple of modifications to improve the safety of this unit?
1)run this one with an electric element, as i believe it will be a lot safer than a naked flame under a glass column IYKWIM.
2)have a fill port and drain on your boiler so your not fiddling around with it all the time
3) you need to make sure you have an even amount of tension on your rods/cables
4) just be bloody careful mate, we'd hate to see anything happen to ya :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Howdy,

seriously can't see much variation in using modular copper sections.

It tensions up and seats like a gem. I finished reinforcing bridge plates support this arvo.

I'm a gas man eos, so testing will see what happens, steam run planned next weekend.

The thing that really gets me is the lower cost, reduced effort and simplicity compared to my 6 plater in copper.

I'm struggling with the art deco wire lattice but it just for looks really.

I'm sure you are aware of the saftey implications of what you are about to do, sometimes "she'll be right mate" works, sometimes it dosn't.

Just be bloody careful. You can hit copper with a hammer, it'll dint, but glass.....
Do me favor mate, at least have a good fire extinguisher on hand and a big fire blanket. I'm just a bit scared of the glass gas combo you got going on. Won't give you much time if the worst happens.
