Hello bac,

re sheet sizing... If you use the 90mm glasses then 125mm square is enough to work with =3cm for gasket area, and rods in the corners.

For the 115mm glasses suggest 150mm square sheet on the same basis although the rods will be thicker on this version.

There's a number of vendors who sell pre cut square sheet in suitable sizes avoiding the cost and effort of cutting sheet... here's one in Aussie
https://www.aemetal.com.au/Webstore/c-148-bshco0p0000.aspx

On the issue of thickness. I used 1.2mm sheet for the 90mm glass model. For the larger 115mm glass version I use the 2.0mm sheet squares.

Just on the strength issue here...the sheets should only ever have soft soldered downcomers and minimal heat used...this preserves the sheet "stiffness" ie don't ever anneal.

The stiffness is a real bonus when building and keeping a nice level sheet when tensioning up.

Brendan so happy with the performance of those gaskets as I guess you would be to...they just last and there's no issues with them.

Hope this helps!

If you knew the max safe downward pressure then a tension wrench would be the go to tool here but I bet there is no data on that .
You could sacrifice one and crush it between two plates using threaded rod and a tension wrench ;-)

Bt did you ever try to see what torque you managed to seal them glasses at ?

Linny,

no sadly ... must do that one day....just continued to tighten by hand with open ended spanner, bout 3/4 turn past firm seating... not had any issues as gaskets are fairly forgiving.

glass being compressed is incredibly strong. You think about holding in egg in you palm and trying to crush it

Hello Red,

Here's a link on how to build a glasser.

http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=4102&hilit=building+a+glass

It's one of the simplest to build, but at a bare min you would need to be able to soft solder...not hard with some practice and use a drill accurately. If your ok with those two aspects there really in not much more involved.

Most ppl would however recommend a simpler pot still for a first time "noob" but if your heart's set on a column then that ain't going to float your boat.

That is a really impressive piece of work can you tell me exactly what the gaskets were made from

Hi Retlaw, bt1 hasn’t been around here for a while but silicon is about the best seal/ gasket.
