Bender The Bubbler Build Thread

So... I've been a member of this site for a month. The day has finally nilly come where I can finally progress to manufacturing "Bender".

Waiting has definitely paid off!
I have been going to the scrap metal yard every Friday for 4 weeks and today they finally came up with the goods & had some 4" copper pipe! My mate and I saw it and snapped it up! A total of 3.6 metres cut in to 2 x 1.8 metre lengths.

We also picked up some small bits and pieces.

I previously bought 2 metres of 2" a previous week, and have 3 metres of 2.5" also I found at work in the scrap metal bin (score!)

My mate already had two CUB 50lt kegs, one of which, he has given to me for a boiler. The total cost of everything we have split for 1 person (me) was $94 for the following;

50ltr keg
1.8m of 4" pipe
3m of 2.5" pipe
2m of 2" pipe
Some 1", 3/4", 3/8", (there is more than is in the photo)

So next is time to decide the set up! Was thinking main product Bender would produce would be whiskey. Maybe a rum but depends on what setup rum needs.

I now I want to make it modular as I have plenty of 4" to go around. Any thoughts?

Farout mate, you've got the material for sure. Well done. Now go and build one exactly like mine. :D

Mate you've nearly got enough stuff there to build an old school 4 x perforated plate job, lot of rooting around and extra soldering in those modular jobs. A few more fittings and a needle valve and your set to go.

Thanks bushy,

Just stalked your build thread. Looks SWEEEEET! I like it! I like how you soldered you sight glasses & then used the hole saw. That's the way I would have done it.

Thanks SBB,

I thought of going modular or not. Still not 100petcent decided. I sort of like both designs. Non - modular with a removable plate tree or modular. What's a good balance for a still that will be mostly doing whiskey?

I was going to manufacture my reducer from the top of the column to the 2 90drgree elbows out of copper sheet. How thick would be thick enough sheet for a manufactured reducer? Is the length the reducer effect vapour path?

You might need to read a bit more mate. Give yourself a well rounded decision. Everything i say will just be my opinion based on what i have read and seen. Therefore in my opinion, you can't go wrong with a semi modular four plater with a packed section for neutrals. Four plates, cap or perf, and a foot or two of rocks or structured packin of some sort and you have all your bases covered. I wouldn't change a thing on my still. Also, in my opinion, making your own modular sections is a lot of rootin around and expense for little gain. If i wanta try a three plate still it would take about ten minutes tops to remove a plate. Just buy yr bits mate.

Personally I'd rather make a few extra easy flanges than stuff about with slide in plate trees ;-)

After having a little bit to do with both sorts I'd need a pretty bloody good reason for NOT going modular IMHO :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Update,

Had a medical procedure on my right elbow for an ongoing problem. Nil lifting, pull/push, swinging vibration etc on my right arm for 3 weeks. I am nearly 2 of these weeks down! So progress on this has slowed til my arm is a bit better.

However, I have been plodding along making some parrots as a time killer. Ignored doctors orders a bit & have paid the price in ultimate elbow pain! I'll post pics of my parrots in the next couple of days after I clean them up.

Been doing some drawings of my bubble column & toying with ideas. I have decided to go modular & bubble cap.

I am also going to make perf plates as I have the material & time. As this is going to be my one & only Bender, I thought I'd give both type of plates a crack. This will be interesting for me later when I do the same recipie & change the plates from bubble cap to perf.

Thanks Linny, Haha! Not desperate yet! Got my ingredients to put down a UJ and a MacWhiskey (with the LME) & am gunna use the pot for these. Can't wait actually!

Here are a few pics of the parrot. Still needs some solder clean up which I'll do later when the arm feels better. Not bad for a 1hr parrot manufacture.

I see A piece of 4" copper in a milling machine getting a sight glass hole milled in it and finally a piece of 4" with "140" written on it and a piece of 3" sitting on like this is a mock up of a section of "dmentds" build thread.

Definitely not a parrot .Not even a dead Norwegian Blue nailed to a perch :laughing-rolling:
