Ok now I have your attention :razz: on a plated column still what would happen if the bottom cap plate you had a very high down commer say 6 in [ or none, would it make a difference ] would it act like a small thumper under the column

I haven't ever built a thumper, but I'm always happy to speculate...

I believe it would act a bit like a thumper, as it would hold more liquid you will prevent too much falling back to the boiler (so it may increase efficiency/speed. One thing though is that you would probably want the section to be higher than normal, if you're liquid level is too close to the plate it may be prone to entrainment/flooding.

My riser is nowhere near 6", that's why I have a large column still to compensate.

Aussie I assume you're talking about how far up the downcomer protrudes above the plate?

Yeh unless your second plate is adjusted for height it would suffer entrainment, to the point i reckon it would reduce plate impact so act as a single plate perhaps...go close on std spacing.

Don't see much point in holding a larger volume of later factions,/ lower quality end spirit quality on bottom plate ...top plate on a 6+ plater or more would be of more value to me but at reduced depths....ie 15mm for lower plated then step to 25mm for top plate.

Impact on run would be reverse of what you want to see...drying lower plate indicating change in factions.

Also impact on flavour retention to consider but I've never got close to those specs on any plate to test.
