I ground a chamfer on thye outside of the furrel and the inside of the pipe and pressed it in with a hydraulic press. Have to be careful to keep it straight so it doesnt pick up on one side

Hi I'm looking at soldering my sight glass sections onto my column modules what I intended was to cut the holes in the column within 2 or 3mm then solder them on then grind the hole out to suit. Does this sound ok I see a lot of people solder on first then cut the hole. I don't have a 4" hole saw.

I used a two inch holesaw for my three inch glasses. Once the sight glass branch is soldered on it's easy then to grind away the extra. Finish with one of those cylindrical flap discs and it'll come up smick :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Die grinder makes it easy but there are a heap of alternatives.

Hi it seems I've been a bit all over the show with this build I've been busy as at work just done 7 days off now for 3 them back for 7 so I thought I'd try fill in some of the gaps now. I've been into a bit here and there after work and so on. Have my 4 inch cut to lengths done a couple of easy flanges and rough cut my sight glass tube section. I ended up using a left over section of 4" with sand paper taped to it to get the one sight glass tube final fitted that I've done worked great with very little gaps left to fill with solder.

Ya not wrong there mate I got these bits for aluminum that are real coarse they rip the big bits of copper real fast. The little flap wheels are great to. I also got a air grinder with 75 x 0.8mm discs great for cutting copper.

Just making up some rings for my 4" easy flanges I tried soft soldering the rings together but they split when I flatten them. anyone else have this drama. Does anyone run flanges without rings on main column cos I have dummied them up with rings and I'm flat out getting a clamp on it seems fine with no rings.

Hard solder the ring together and then you can flatten them and soft solder to the pipe.

Have a look at the easy flange thread in the workshop tips section. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yeah thanks mate I figured that was the case. I don't knot if it is the silver solder I have or what but I can't seem to get enough heat into it with my propane torch yo melt the hard solder will have to take them to work next week and use the oxy.

Just a couple of questions on the gin basket and packed section does the gin basket go right at the base and packed section just below the RC. Where do you get volcanic rock and does it need to be anything special and does it need yo be cleaned.
