Plate tree location.

Perforated & bubble cap plated columns

Plate tree location.

Postby SX170 » Mon Jul 29, 2013 12:52 pm

Hi all,
have started a 4" bubbler build and I am about to cut the 4" pipe for the main column. Its obviously too expensive to stuff up so some advice from the gurus here would be appreciated.
Does the distance from the keg flange to the first plate make a difference? I was thinking around 200 - 250mm.
Same for the last plate to the flange on the top of the column 200 - 250mm.
There are 4 plates at 125mm apart.
As always, any tips appreciated.

Cheers.

200mm will be fine. I am in the process of building my bubbler and my bottom plate is going to mount on the flange on the keg.

Hey SX,I hope I'm not too late to chime in here :angry-banghead: I'd probly go about 100-150mm above the top plate, that way there,if you wanted to attach a packed column or gin basket at a later date, you're not gunna be overly high, not that it really matters, you can always just extend your take off :handgestures-thumbupleft:

When I did mine I had the first plate 4 inches above the beginning of the 4 inch pipe, if that makes sense, not big on metric. same with the deflag , 4 inches above top plate. Works like a dream, measurements were supplied to me by the guru,( Mac) so should be right.

Confession time, visited an old member to day ( Draino), he gave me a bottle of the best "Hook Rum" Ive ever tried, Been plowing into it for a few hours now :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: Tis fuckin good,
Dom your right 4 inches is 100ml......basics are 4 inch spacings for everything ,4 inches from bottom of column to first plate, four inches between plates, four inches from top plate to deflag. Hopefully i aint to pissed and got it wrong.

Yummy If you are really interested in making a similar product to Bundy , there is a possibility that this might give you a hint or two, Ive yet to try it my self though. Many years ago it was possible to buy Double OP Bundy, this was bottled at 75.9 %. This stuff is rarer than rocking horse shit these days ...it was taken off the market in the mid 80s. It now sells for around $1500 per bottle on ebay. I still own 4 sealed bottles of it...........I cant afford to drink them :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:
From what I have been told this rum was bottled at barrel / vat proof, all other bundy's ....OP and UP are and were diluted versions of this same thing.
Now consider that this rum is aged in huge oak vats for a period of about 5 years, the angels will get some, so the original Proof of what was put into those vats could and would be a little higher. ;-)
Have a play see what you come up with.

By the way , see those little nicks in the label on the bottom photo, those are the batch codes that Bundaberg used back in the days before bar codes.

Some of those old bundy bottles are quite interesting, apparently they can sell for a lot of money, even empty :scared-eek:
