My new 8 inch column arrived today

Postby the Doctor » Thu Aug 29, 2013 3:32 pm

Could not be happier, My new 5 Star, 8 inch "Methusular" column arrived this afternoon. It is a beautiful still. beyond my expectations. At last Lyn and I will be able to keep up with demand without working long hours. The attention to detail on this column is just incredible. Special thanks to Mac and Mrs Mac for an effortless sale, quick delivery and beautiful packing. There was not one step of the process I could fault, guys you are amazing. Thankyou so very much from two happy campers.

Truly magnificent looking apparatus Doc, I really think plated stills of this size are the way of the future in micro (and maybe not so micro) distilleries :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yes mate this is to be a registered commercial still. It does not have to be until I commision it and the boiler. I just got the go ahead from the ATO to run my commercial distilling school so this will be a part of providing commercial distillers, assistance with getting their competence recognised. I have to confirm to customs and excise the final boiler capacity and a few extra bits such as a 400mm packed section before they will give it the final nod. But I have been assured they are happy to have someone train and assess, as this has been a problem for them in the past. As this is the optimum sized still for a small craft distillery. I think it will not just be good for us but also for those who wish to become commercial.

At the moment I think I will be heading for a 300 litre boiler. I work from 7am till 3.30 pm when distilling. I am thinking that 6 3600 watt elements with 300 litres should be the sweet spot between a reasonable days work and a good return for power. I am also thinking a double wall on the boiler with heavy machine oil in the boiler double skin as a thermal sink to hold heat.

Awesome looking rig :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I reckon you should put the boiler under the floor and run it where it is in the picture :D

I am going to put it on display in the bar over the weekend to show it off... I guess I am just a very proud distiller, and she is beautiful. A work of art.
