Modular Bubblers

Postby tipsy » Wed Sep 11, 2013 4:29 pm

Just wondering what configuration people are running their bubblers in?

Since having mine I've run it mostly for neutrals. 4 plates and the packed section. Runs pretty close to 96%

Last 2 runs I've done UJSM with the four plates and it run out at 93% is this too high for a flavoured wash?
It doesn't seem to have much flavour white but I am new to UJSM so don't really know what to expect.

I'm thinking of trying it with just 3 plates next.

hey tipsy

i run the same as u and I have found that the sweet spot for my Bourbon knock off is from about 90/91 down to about 83/84. it starts at aprox 93 but by the time I take fores and heads it is about 88/90 and stays there for ages. it only takes me 2 jars to go from 86ish down to 83 and i turn it off. I am satisfied with the flavour I am getting now at about 10 gens but the first 5 gens def not as much. i might do 3 next time myself just to experiment and i have a rum on which will def be 3 plates only as its a first gen and i am looking for more flavours.

I have had the same experience with the 4 plates running variants of McWhisky :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ran one early with all 5 plates and I think it was at about 92% for the whole run.

Haven't tried with just 3 plates yet, happy with what I am producing with 4 plates taste wise I reckon 5 strips a bit too much flavour.

Start with 4 plates champ, there's a very good reason I base my designs around a 4 plate still ;-)

Mine runs at 92 for the duration of the run. Soon as it drops it's almost too late cause i'm startin to push tails through. I've gone back to cut jars for a while because i was gettin lazy with me demijohn straight under the parrot. Walked away from the still for too long and ended up with a gallon of beautiful tails

Good one :-D
Unfortunately Mac,as you know, i only have one of those cumbersome semi modular stills. I can't just be takin out and putting in whole plates. That's a lot of work. Shoulda bought a Five Star :angry-banghead:

Are you happy with the flavour Bushy?

Are you keeping only the hearts, or blending a small amount of tails?

Everything I've tasted from 3 plates tastes like low wines to me . I tried some ones 3 plate rum and thought it either need a couple of yrs to age or a re run

Yeah I found when using 3 plates you need to slow the run down a bit the get the tails to compress, although a strip n spirit run works quite well through 3 plates for heavy rum or whisky.

I run both Rum n whisky with 4 plates, dont have a choice really as Its not modular, Usually the whole run sits around 92%. more than happy with what i get flavour wise.

To me UJ never tastes like much till its spent some time on oak. It improves heaps given time, from what Ive read Bourbon type spirits in general get most of their flavor from the oak and the way its charred or or toasted.
