Alriiight, pics;

Started with this lump of pipe I found out the farm a while ago... Pretty heavy walled, and nice and bashed up as you can see...

Image

it's close enough to 1.5"... a bit hard to tell because most of it is a tad beaten up.

Image

I cut enough for the risers and the cups on the downcomers...

Image

Then used my special vice and a flap disc to get them square and even height;

Image

And it's a bit hard to see, but here's the mockup of the plate with 3 and 4 caps... You can kind of see the size of the 6" pipe in lead pencil on the bench...

3 plates is easy;

Image

4 plates is pretty snug;

Image

Considering that the ID of the pipe is actually smaller than the circle I've drawn, and by the time I get a weir in there as well there's not gunna be much space between the caps... How close together can the caps be?

8", eh? Jeez, I was way off!

The plate would still have to seal against the pipe to prevent vapour escaping up the sides, yeah?

The shed I'm working in there is the workshop at the farm... Been in the family for about 50 years... If the tool you need isn't in there, you're not looking hard enough!

And yeah, I like to think of it as recycling... More fun than getting 10c a can though!

:laughing-rolling: think they only give you cash for cans in S.A looks like a 3 phase power supply on the shed wall. :D

Certainly is!

Got MIG, Arc and Oxy welders, a full length pit, bench grinders, drill press, more assorted power tools than you could possibly need and a wall covered in every hand tool ever invented...

There's always at least half a dozen projects happening at any one time... You just clear a spot on the bench and fire away!

Hopefully get an early knock off today and start cutting slots in my bubblecaps :handgestures-thumbupleft:

A small update;

Spent an hour or so in the shed this arvo, tidying up the my caps and cutting some sheet for the caps, and the sightglasses...

Made this little jig up to cut ~50mm ends for my bubblecaps... the center drill bit in the holesaw is snapped, which lets me cut complete circles out :D

Image

First I cut out ~90mm circles, for the outside plate of my sightglasses... Then I cut 50mm circles out of the centre of them. they will end up with full sized centre holes, I just wanted to make use of the offcuts first... I used a piece of the 6' pipe, split and annealed, for these...

then I cut the other 8x 50mm discs out of scraps of thinner sheet I had laying around... Nothing gets wasted around here!

Image

Tomorrow I might get a chance to solder up the bubblecaps :handgestures-thumbupleft:

One step closer!

Cheers guys :) I couldn't/wouldn't be doing it if you guys hadn't done it before, I just hope that I can inspire someone :) my build shows that with a bit of time and a few pretty basic tools, anyone can build something as awesome as a 6" bubblecap still :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Fuckin' soft solder grrrr :angry-banghead:

So much fun to use when it's all flowing good, but just oooone little gap and you're fucked. Just spent about an hour soldering up 6 of my bubblecaps... At least 40 minutes of that was spent on one of them, and it's still not watertight :handgestures-thumbdown: probably should just start again, but I'm too arrogant for that!

The other 5 look awesome though :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'm a little confused;

Downcomers. I'm seeing a plate trees with caps on the the bottom of all of the DC's except the bottom one, which has a 180° bend happening... Why? No issue, I've got a pair of 1" 90°s here, but I'd love to know the reason...

No progress today, hopefully have another play tomorrow arvo :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I assume you mean the J-trap that some of the bubblers have...I think it's a matter of preference...my bottom plate is the same as the rest...as long as vapor can't get up it, it'll work fine.
