Crossbred Bubbler build

Postby 7evan » Fri Mar 28, 2014 3:57 pm

Well, I've been inspired by all the other lads building their own bubblers. Now it's my turn to have a crack and throw some hammers.
I was initially going to take the path of least resistance and buy a Mac4. But whats the fun in that right.
I'm going the tried and proven and trying to replicate the Mac4 Neutraliser.
So far so good. I have been lucky and have had thd use of a workshop built for 'bashing metal' so that's made my life easier. I've taken a different approach with the flanges. I tried a couple of easy flanges but stuffed one of them. So instead I had a big ass sheet of 1.5mm copper to make some. And the machinery! So I cut out a heap of 'washers' if you like and hard soldered them on to my modules. Sorry Mac, everything is going to be hard soldered on this bad boy. My soldering has definitely gotten better as I've gone along. But they'll be covered by stainless clamps!
So all I'm building is the 4 sight glass modules, plates, RC and packed section. The rest will be made up of the Mac Pot I've already got. Hopefully looks the goods. Bit of old and a bit of new!

wow thats some nice looking stuff. Looks like you scored with being able to use a workshop like that :happy-partydance:

I thought of doing the condensers like that using the stop end as a flange but chickened out as thought people would be always doing it if it was the best way. guess hard soldering it would work fine

nice work :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yeah that's my one worry with the build, the flanges not being think enough. But I've got a parcel on its way from you know who with the SGKs, clamps, copper packing and a heap of seals (not the furry wet kind)
I'll just pack the shit out of them :?

Hey evanmac I used a hydraulic press to squash my easy flanges flat, had to go for thicker gasket material found some pure silicone at Clark rubber 3mm thick has done the job nicely with no leaks and lots of turns still on the clamps

Nice build dude, when you say hard soldered do you mean brazing,if so I have been doing a bit lately and found it a fair bit more dificult until I tryed SILVERCOAT 45T.rods at BOC they come with flux on wich makes things flow reel nice ,not cheap but worth a try($35 for two 500mm rods)makes those stainless to copper joins easy.good luck with the rest of the build cheers hillzabilly

yeah I have just flattened my pipe with no ring on it so it would be the same thickness. As thegoose says just need to have a thicker gasket to take up the space

Familiar machinery there mate! Great work so far & I'm super jealous of you being able to do it! I'm still on office duties after my surgery.

The 3" will turn up. It always does.

I've poked my nose in at some plumbers shops in industrial estates......yeah they will jib you about making a still...they arn't stupid but ...they have a rack of off cuts of various sizes and will give you a good price on off cuts that they know will end up in the scrappys bin sooner or later :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I dont see why people want to know what you need shit for. Sure they prob know what your doing but who cares. Some seem interested in it but only to ask questions never seem to be interested in doing it them self. I don't lie what I am doing, but dont know why people have to always ask they seem to know what I am doing with it as why else would they ask :P

Every time I go to get molasses they guy asked what I used it for every time I say rum lol. Still asks every time though like something would change :laughing-rolling: Well he actually says making home brew again? now lol :P but first 5 times it was what you use it for

guy scrap yard knew why I wanted a meter of 3" and few meters of 3/4" and 1" lol
