Perforated & bubble cap plated columns

DJ Frestyla's Glasser

Postby djfrestyla » Sat Aug 23, 2014 7:25 am

Hi Everyone,
I have been slowly collecting the bits n pieces, so that I could Join the Glasser trend.
I am as happy as with my 4" modular copper bubbler, but after seeing some of these Glassers on here, I caught the bug.
The main reason for this is, that they look awesome, no need to have a light hanging in front of them, and a really good vision of what is going on inside the column.
First of all, I would like to thank all the Glasser Builders on this forum, for sharing their builds & info, to make this build as easy as.
I would also like to thank MR & Mrs Mac, for their ongoing support to everyone on here, and 5 Star Distilling, for the awesome products.

OK, first of all I started by ordering 6x 150 x 150 x 2mm copper plate from A&E metal Merchants https://www.aemetal.com.au/Webstore/p-1 ... -pack.aspx

Then some 4" borosilicate cylinders from 5 Star Distilling
I had a couple of bits of 4" copper pipe already on hand, as well as some 2" pipe, 3/4" pipe, some 1/4" pipe.
With the Plates, I started by marking the centres, than using a compass, I marked out the internal & external edges of where the glass cylinders will sit.
Then I marked out the circle of where the booker rod holes will pass, deciding to go with 6 x 8mm rods, I marked this out at 60 degree centres.

Now to the bubble caps.
I decided to go with a single 2" bubble cap, to keep in line with my other bubbler (as I can use the modular plate tees, to add on under the glass column, for extra plates if needed), so I cut some 2" pipe, soldered on the copper end caps, and cut my slots with angle grinder & 1mm disk ( took the handle out of angle grinder, used a long bolt, then clamped the bolt firmly in a vice).
2 bubble cap.JPG

Next I used my 2 scrap 4" sections & made some easy flanges on both sides, one side as a ferule, the other to act as re-infocement where it will join a plate.

Welcome to the club DJ,

yep seeing what's going on at all times is both entertaining and informative. Won't take you long to see the changes and workout how it's trending.

Nice start and good work look forward to seeing this one come together.

My next job was to join the bottom plate to the ferule.
4 Cap in place.JPG

Then with the top ferule, I added a plate, then drilled out a heap of 3mm holes to let vapour through.
Then a bit of a mock up

Clean up the plates

Now, I realise that the distance between top & bottom Plate is 490mm, fark I only brought 3x 1m lengths of booker rod, as I was going to cut them in half for my 6.
Oh well ill grab some more in Canberra next week.
here is some more pics

An inside look at the single bubble cap.

More progress pics to follow, once I round plate corners, add the remaining booker rods, clean up.

Geez you work fast :D

More quality work...

Just wonder if there might just be a break from the traditional red seal and we might see some fluro yellow/green/orange seals or the like?

This build so far has taken about 8 hours, pretty quick.
I started last Sunday, done about 2 hrs each afternoon, after work (while I was waiting for the Mrs to cook dinner :happy-partydance:
I am estimating about another 3 hrs work on the column, with rounding corners, rod installation, etc.
Next thing will be to modify from the deflag up, as I want to replace the elbow with a 2" tee & easy flange at the top (to allow for a modified cap for cleaning, & also gin / spice bag to be inserted on the run), plus a modification to the deflag inlet to allow for a flow meter.
My idea, is that having the spice/gin bag on the deflag side of the bend, will allow for oils to fall back into column, and not into product as it would on the other side of the bend, as I will most prob only do the occasional gin / spiced rum run, I cannot warrant the use of a full carter head.
Still Prog 6.JPG

Any thoughts on this /Idea's ?

Hello djtrestyla
i wonder if you plan disassemble the tower after each run to empty the plates?

BourbonJunkie ,
I think that with the slots, work on 5 mm high, & 5 mm apart, this seemed to work great on my other 4".

casamayor ,
I will be drilling a small drainage hole (0.8mm) in each plate & each downcomer cup, as I did with my 4" copper bubbler, this will overcome the need to disassemble after each run.
Cheers

casamayor,
Just make sure that if you do plate drain holes / downcomer drain holes, that the liquid does not land strait down the next downcomer.
I once seen some useless idiot do that :scared-eek:
Luckily it was spot6ted in a pic my Mac, thus I corrected it.

BourbonJunkie,
Off the top of my head, this sounds close to correct, give or take a few, will make sweet F.A.
I never measured, I just put a bit of pvc tape around the pipe, at what looked like about 5mm (was too lazy to bother taking 2 steps to pick up ruler, as I would have had to put rum can down), then I just guesstimated the 5mm apart, some closer, it don't really make too much difference.

Thanks Redux,
I got some tidying up to do, & straiten up that 2" tee at the top, add the flow meter, and she should be a goer.
