Matt's Glasser - Another Primus Bubbler

Hi Guys,

I've been running my 2" pot for a while and the bubbler bug has bitten hard. Really wanted to get a rig off Mac but the Mrs shut that idea down real fast when we found out we have a bub on the way lol. My compromise was to build one myself haha. I'm an IT guy and have never really done any soft soldering or metal work before so saw this as a chance to learn some new skills and make some better hooch at the same time.. Win Win!! :-D

I've been collecting copper bit's and pieces for the last couple of months and have finally started the build. Specs will be as follows:

- 5 plates (5th will be removable) using 110mm Primus glasses and 4" pipe flattened for the plates which are 150mm diameter.
- Single 50mm x 50mm bubble caps with 38mm x 35mm high risers and 19mm downcomers with a 25mm bath depth.
- 4" x 150mm RC with 5 x 19mm tubes.
- 2" x 600mm PC with 4 x 13mm tubes.
- 4" x 500mm packed section for neutrals.

Spent all day last Sunday in the garage while my BWKO was running slow on the Pot and managed to get quite a bit done.

Soldered Bubble Caps on spare plate and cut the excess off with aviation snips. Then cleaned them up on the bench grinder and hand file:

Slotted them with an Ozito rotary tool (Poor mans Dremel) and used the hose clamp as a depth guide:

Bubble Caps made.. Only one slotted though so far. Rest will be done this weekend:

PC done. Just need to solder my easy flanges on and clean it up a little:

My clamps, bends and reducers rocked up yesterday from Mac.. Got to say the quality of the stainless is awesome! Also got my plates flattened, cut and rod holes drilled. This is as far as I've got so far, not bad for 12 hours work lol. My threaded rod should rock up by the end of week. Hope to finish off the plates and start building the plate tree this weekend. Then I've just got the RC and parrot to go. Hopefully won't be too long :music-deathmetal:

I'll keep you up to date with the progress!

Matt

That's some real nice work there matt :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just goes to show that with a little reading, some patience and a few basic tools you can build things you never thought possible.

Well done, keep up the good work.

Well I have the plate tree finished using the single sided custom EPDM tri-clamp seals. They were bloody fiddly to stretch into place but they seem to seal when cold. I'll see how they go on the vinegar run. Just need to make my RC and the parrot and polish things up a bit. Very close now :-D

Mocked up without the RC:

Got my RC made up and did all my cooling plumbing. Just need to finish my parrot now. Did a vinegar run and she bubbles away very nicely without any leaks in the glass sections. :happy-partydance: Looks like Mac's custom EPDM tri clamp seals are the way to go for the Primus lanterns if you can't be bothered cutting them from silicon sheets

I've got a small vapour leak at one of the easy flange unions. Must of smashed them a little too flat. Just need to replace the seal with one that has the ridge on both sides and I reckon it will be sweet! :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'll have to do something about the boiler though. I really need a fill port and a 4 in mount. It's way to much of a pain in the butt to take this thing off each time I fill it. Hmm wonder if I can con the wife to let me get a milk can boiler :shhh:

That's some really nice work there matt   you should be very proud.

I bet you can't wait to get the good stuff into it and pump out some great shine :handgestures-thumbupleft:

A fill port is a must i recon, it would drive my batty pulling the rig apart every run.
