Another Rotten Glasser

Postby Thelegion » Fri Sep 18, 2015 2:26 pm

Let me start by saying that I'm not going to bore anyone with lousy build pictures, no one wants to see that stuff anyway, Right? If I find a different way or a new idea I will post that, seem fair? There are some great glassers here and I'm just following your build ideas, so thanks to all for your impressive glass towers.

I ended up giving my last build of a perforated plate still to my brother, that thing took 80 hrs to build. Next thing you know copper starts showing up at the door, copper sheet, fittings and pipe of various sizes, oh and a keg too. (the prick took mine) So as a good brother it is my duty to build another and a better one than his.

So far I've worked the keg a little to clean it up, picked up some FSD glass and seals, product condenser is almost done and I had the plates water jeted as per the cad template I posted a while back.

Dimensions are:
PC. is a 24 x 2" inch with 3 x 1/2" internal pipes
plates are 175mm with 6 x 8mm all thread holes (all holes as per cad template)
7x 15.80mm (adjusted for my pipe size here) plate holes, one is for the downcomber (6 bubble caps)

If anyone has some cool ideas go ahead and post em, I'll study them all.

cheers, Legion..

ps. yes I can post pics if anyone really wants them.

Well of course we want photos and plenty of them!! It's not a build thread without them.

Great to see you have another crack at a bubbler.

Good luck mate and enjoy the build :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Here is a pic of a re-purposed pressure gauge turned into the water control centre, I'll post a complete view when done.

PLAN "B"

So I Completely fornicated the pooch, I went to drill the needle valves out to fit some 3/8 copper in the back of the gauge and drilled right through. The bit grabbed the soft brass and I drilled the valve seat and all right out from behind. The thing took a bit of heat and whacking to get it all apart, I'll re visit it at a later date.

Water management Steam Punk Plan "B" Finished, still sad about the last attempt. I'm sure I'll get over it after the cleaning rum, I mean run.

So I have been flanging around on my days off and came up with a few more pieces. I put together the riser portion of the plates and built the RC, now I did not build a shotgun RC as I had thought on a another idea that might work out. It's a single cold "head" (no idea what to call it) that sits in the centre of the vapor path. I thought long and hard on this (bout 25min) and ran some surface area numbers and came up with this. I was going to add some cooling fins but opted out, If it doesn't perform well I add the fins. The cold head sits 1/2 inch below the main pipe and flush with the top, but it can go on either way.

Now one of the big reasons I made the RC like this is that It can be tricky to build the "shotgun type" and materials are at a premium. I hammered some pipe out after annealing it and still didn't like the way the shotgun was going together. My last build had one and it was a bit of a PITA but came together well, I wanted to make something very simple that works very well. (don't know yet) The thing is you can always modify it fairly easy and re test it. I built a 2 inch packed column for a friend and used a internal coil for reflux, I placed the coil right in the opening of the column to the PC.; this was able to completely shut off any vapor going to the PC and go into full reflux.

The plates have 6x2cm risers with a flared bottom, caps are coming but I want to make a jig up for cutting them.

Interesting idea. Good to see something different. Im thinking about using the threaded rod right through the rc and packed section and extending the 4inch pipe a few mill further then the plate and putting a seal in between them. Save me easy flanging and with my tub ive got plenty of plate to use.

Now that's interesting, I bet if your plates are thick enough you could possibly have one all thread from bottom to top on a glasser too.

Hmmmmmmmmm... ;)

Yer ill prob run 10mm 2 rods on the "backside" and 6mm on the front for the other 4 bracing for plumbing too. Also tempted to weld 2 10mm nuts on the keg to start the rod in.

So since no one here likes porn, I should not post any new picks of completed items right. I wonder what those 4 copper discs are for, yah the ones with the holes in them?

OK So I won't then,
