No problem at all. as long as risers and downcomers match i dont see a problem. they wont affect volume

So my plates turned up today, after marking out I ripped in with with the trusty Ol wiss snips. Got there in the end, hand filed to my scribe line.
What a mission turned out ok though. 2mm plate is not for snips I'll say!
Anyway bit of progress today.

Postie came today with all my clamps, ferrules, seals, and glass :D
Thanks Mr & Mrs Mac for the awesome stuff and excellent service! :handgestures-thumbupleft:

So these are the caps I was planning on using but there only 20mm high inside, how much clearance do I need from the top of the riser to the cap?
I was thinking 3mm so 18mm riser and 12mm downcomer, Should I extend the caps with pipe to get more bath depth?
Or what is a good bath depth for rum or whiskey, I'm not adding anymore plates or packed section I have the bok for neutrals.

Any input would be much appreciated
Cheers guy's

up to you on depth. maybe this thread will help

http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=3182&p=48434

you want speed and high ABV or higher flavour, noting in the above thread Mac said

I've run bath depths of 20 to 35mm and cant say I noticed any real difference in flavour carry over ;-)

Right now I'm confused 8-} Do your risers need to be higher than the downcomer? or will the pressure from the boiler keep everything in check?

Not necessarily. It's in a thread here somewhere that it can be beneficial to have your risers slightly lower than your bath depth. My caps are only 20mm high and I run with 20mm bath depth. I can't remember the exact measurement of my risers but 3mm clearance sounds about right.

Update,
I made some templates on autocad for the bubble caps and plates. Stuck the first one on and thought "I'm not doin this another thirty times"
So I got the handbrake to come down, cut em out and stick em on while I stuffed em into the grinder.
I'll be honest and say it took 4 stubbies to cut the slots, and 24 - 36 to clean the burrs off
I drilled the first plate, and "Fuck me it works" put the glass on and realise there's not enough clearance for the nuts to turn :angry-banghead: So modified the cad template to suit.

Long way to go yet!!

:laughing-rolling: great that the handbreak helped wich mine would :laughing-rolling:
The burrs are time consuming aren't they.
Keep up the good work :handgestures-thumbupleft:

How did you remove the burs?
Drill press and emery like others or did you use a scraper or file?

So with xmas being done and dusted for another year I'm gonna finish this thing,
with my downcomer is 15mm from the top of the cap below enough clearance? ive only done the one so far so its no biggie to change it it was an off cut sitting on the bench and thought "yep that'll do"

What bath depth did you decide on?
Any chance the 2 will overlap?

Its only 15mm bath depth but from pics ive seen the bubbles would be around the downcomer. Does it even matter?

Got the shits big time today chasing a pinhole in the original RC which I wasn't real happy with anyway :angry-banghead:
So in the scrap bin you go, Started from scratch and used 6 x 3/4 internals this time turned out ok no leaks thank fuck! I made it a bit different this time I let the plates sit inside the pipe by 5-10mm :D so when I silver soldered them in I could get a bit up the walls and on the plate.
So now I just have the bottom plate to make up tomorrow and should be good to go..

good job on the RC. Heat up the old one and pull it appart. im sure you could use the copper in another place or redo the RC and sell it no leaks. i bet theres someone up there that would want one :handgestures-thumbupleft:

my 2" RC fell apart 2 times before i managed to get it on the 3rd and chased leaks. ahh fun times :angry-banghead:

Fuck pullin it apart its silver soldered i'd need a bigger heating tip!!! then grinding blades I made the new one in a fraction of the time it would take to dismantle and rebuild :handgestures-thumbupleft:
But if you want it ill give to ya and pay post :romance-kisscheek:

So I had a productive day.
Got the 4" mount on then set about assembling and this is how it went. I slotted the middle 2 plates and left top and bottom with holes, loosely fitted it all together then went about tensioning it down, all fitted I filled the whole column from the drain hole up and stopped when each glass was full to identify any leaks, at the end of the day there was none.
I was expecting it to flog out especially cos I'm a rough bugger when it comes to copper "slap it up n get the cash is what my first boss said" :))
Just gotta give it a good polish now and see if it works!
