Triplet

Perforated & bubble cap plated columns

Triplet

Postby googe » Fri Apr 15, 2016 2:36 pm

Hey all, built this last year, has since been pulled apart and converted into other builds. It worked very well but had issues I got tired of trying to rectify. Mainly due to drain issues, could have been fixed but I didn't have the funds or tools for the job.
first column was three single cap plates.
Second column was a packed section.
Third column was a shotgun condenser.
I would run at between 3.5~4+ lph on the first column and around 4.5~5 lph running both. With the 3/4" feed into the 4" column the run action was different to straight of a keg, more stable and could be run faster. The main reason behind it was to be able to set the three way valve to run just plates for rum, and set the valve another way and run both columns for neutral, which it did well. Only issues like I said was the drains, think I made them to small and would have been ideal to have the go straight back into the base of the boiler instead of having traps.

That thing is the shiznit. Looks like you tried to recreate one of those fancy multi billion dollar distillery setups.

Cheers bluc. That's what inspired me warramungas, always dreamed of owning one, my half assed attempt at having something like it lol. I scraped it a few months ago and built other things. $30 from.www.5stardistilling.com.au Aussie. It's a T port three way.

I made two copper rings that bolt together pressing the glass to the flange, then cut a hole in a 4" cap and it slides over the rings.

Now that's a multifunctional duo of columns. :handgestures-thumbupleft: The three way valve does it have a stopper so that the vapour can't be shut off?
What did you do about the brass fittings?

The inlet on the first tower where the vapor enters the tube how do you stop the vapour going back up the inlet?

The pipe that goes from your boiler to the plated section, where it enters the plated section at the bottom what stops the vapour from backing up the pipe is it just the pressure that the boiler makes that directs the vapour up through the plated section? Prob a dumb question now that I have given it more thought wouldn't be any difference then having it sitting ontop of the boiler just happens to have the steam intake on side rather than bottom..

Yeah bugger all pressure, don't need much power to run caps. it rAn nice with the small infeed rather than straight of the boiler.

Seriously considering something similar, Would save the need for headroom, may make it so if needed can be used triclamped together straight onto the boiler or in this style :handgestures-thumbupleft:

If the whole thing was scaled down till the boiler was about 100l and the plated sections were 4 inch would be awesome :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Interesting pic looks like the steam injects into the deflag at the top, drain straight out the bottom I wonder were the pipe on the bottom left goes..

Stand corrected it doesn't go into deflag, there is a pipe running down left side, the pipe I thought went into deflag goes round behind it so first tower can be bypassed if wanted..
