SS Whisky Yeast

Postby 7evan » Mon Nov 03, 2014 9:38 pm

Hi lads. Is this alright to use or is it a 'Turdbo'?

Would i be better off just using Safale for a scotch wash?

I bought a 4 pack of them on ebay and still have one left. It is not meant to be a turbo but has that turbo harshness even after making tight cuts and aging. It actually came with instructions from SS that tell you to use carbon filtering to remove impurities, so that indicates it's turbo-ness.

If you are going to use it I would recommend pitching half the packet for a 25l wash instead of the whole thing and keeping the temp at the lowest end of the recommended range. I was using one packet for 50l and still had trouble keeping the temps down because it goes nuts and trust me, if it gets too warm it stinks just like a turbo.

I would go with the safspirit range or even US-05 or another ale yeast would be a better alternative.

I have been using US05 with pretty good results I just thought I would go for a yeast strain more for whisky

Sigh might have to buy one of these

At a 76g bag it will be full of DAP and other turbo goodies. Safspirit does a yeast call malt which is designed for a Scotch. Failing that I would look at Nottingham from the beer range, I think it would be a bit better at the job than US-05.

I have used it a few times works fine particularly on rye based washes but there is better choices for whiskey like the safspirit malt whisky yeast which I have used alot.
A Scottish ale yeast would also be a great choice for a whisky yeast. :-B
However the still spirits rum yeast in those packs is excellent for molasses based rums :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I use this one for my Whiskeys and Rums and find it excellent! It's funny though, when I first purchased it a few months ago, I thought, "this will make things exe" but if your doing multiple generations you rarely add more yeast so I still have around 350gms of my original buy. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I got some of these not realising they were a turbo, I was going to put them aside but decided to rip one open just for a look. It has far less nutrient compared to the turbo which I'm guessing is due to being designed for a 7 day ferment. Thinking I might give one a try using 5kg of sugar instead of the recommended 7Kg per 25L with only half the packet. The yeast itself is supposed to be a single culture whisky strain but it has amyloglucosidase and yeast nutrient added - which appear to be DAP and salts.

Anyone else had a go with this yeast lately? I put one in a Nutrigrain wash on Saturday nite and by Monday arvo it was all done
It went fking mental..!! Absolutely off tap... That said there were no off smells at all, in fact it smelt really good. Was a bit of a test as it was mentioned it may of been a turbo type thingo. The wash taste pretty dry, no hint of sweetness, a little fruity maybe?? It certainly chewed through the malt more than the Lowans in the other barrels. Will do a run this weekend an see if its ok. So, anyone used it ??

I've used it and only had a 50% success rate with it. I won't bother again.
I just use the Safmalt yeast.

I pitched a full packet in a 60L allbran/ cornflake sugar head wash and half a pack in a 30L experimental partial all grain (polenta + LME) mash and both have fermented out fully with only a slight turbo odor. I am currently stripping the second half of the of the 60L wash and hope to get the spirit run done this evening so will let you know how the cuts turn out. I am thinking about washing some of the left over yeast and trying make a starter to give the yeast culture a go without the added nutrients. Reason being is I am struggling to get full ferments using bakers yeast but also just going to do it for the fun of it cause I've never made a starter and just bought some glassware and built a magnetic stir-plate :-)

I should add that I only used 12Kg of sugar to 60L of water for an OG of 1.092 which was probably a bit high and although there are no off flavors or much sweetness it is still a bit harsh. I am really beginning to notice in my results why alot of members are trying to drum into us noobs here that lower gravity/ less sugar to start is best. It only occurred to me today that the cornflakes and allbran were probably unnecessary with the nutrients that would have been in the packet. I have scrapped the idea of trying to harvest the yeast from the last ferment but am thinking about trying to grow some from a packet and stepping it up for a starter to try it without the excess of nutrients - seeing as it can tolerate alcohol better and ferments out fully.

I personally don't go much on the flavours from the cereal I use it more so for the nutrient. I do the stripping run with my still spirits super re-flux de-tuned to a pot still then do the spirit run with re-flux aiming for a neutral although the taste is still slightly there. I have just been sticking to the recepie I know for comparison reasons mostly and because it has worked reasonably well for me. I'm yet to try a TPW but beginning to realise the recipe would better suit what I am after although I don't like the taste of tomatoes so not sure if the flavour will be in it.

I've done a few TPW's with my super reflux in pot mode and reflux. There was no tomato taste in either pot strip runs, pit spirit, reflux - nothing. But there is a very nice, creamy smelling spirit in the middle of good hearts. I have 5 litres at the moment of hearts only settling on port chips with a small amount of vanilla bean, it's at 55% and only a few weeks old - it's pretty decent already.
I've also done a version of nutri wash with good results from a single pot mode run - a lot better than expected.
I'm on second generation ferment of nutri now.
My CFW recipe is 2 days out from being ready to run.
I am going to concentrate on these three recipes for the foreseeable.
