Turbo Yeast

Hi during my first wash I just used normal yeast, my mate showed me a product called Alcotec 48 pure turbo super yeast, it offers plenty of good outcomes but does anyone have any experiance with this stuff is it the best to use or should I just use normasl yeast!

G'day Tinepole.

What do you mean by "normal yeast" do you mean, bakers yeast or some other sort of home brew shop product ???

I am only new here myself but I'll have a go at answering.

I have only tried the Still Spirits "Turbo Classic" yeast as far as home brew shop yeasts are concerned and I only used one the first time I did a wash.

From what I read the home brew shop "turbos" are more about getting the highest alcohol % and no so much about making the best flavoured spirit possible.

A mate of mine tells me that the still spirits "Triple Distilled" has produced a much better neutral spirit for him than the regular "turbo classic"

When I made my Turbo wash it smelled really bad, I have a reflux column and want the best cleanest smelling neutral I can get so after some reading I ended up here - http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=8

The link is for a Tomato Paste Wash, it's a "supermarket" ingredient wash designed to be both cheap and produce a good clean neutral product.

If your using a pot still you will be after something different to this I guess, and I imagine others here have used the exact yeast you speak of though and will be able to offer you more insight into what it is like.

Hi Tinepole,fuck all that HBS crap off,go to woolies or Coles and grab yourself a tin at Lowans bakers yeast,in the red tin.Costs fuck all and will last for months! Or better still send 5Star a PM and he can set you up with some of his yeast.Either way you'll come out a mile in front.
All that HBS shit should be branded with a health authority warning.GTH hit the nail on the head,they suck you into buying the shit,then you gota buy the carbon and shit to clean the grog up to make it drinkable.
Better still,go buy a packet,make a batch of wash up,and at the end just take a sniff of the fermented product.Then make up a batch using bakers or punkins yeast and let me know which smells better :handgestures-thumbupleft: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

+1 With GTH & BD Get off the HBS roundabout try a Tom Paste Wash its about a third of the price and its nice and clean no need to put it on carbon to clean it up to make it drinkable.But if you want to use the turbo yeast, try this from (alkoholics) on HD

ok this is simple if you are using turbo yeast and its the packs that contain 205g of yeast and nutrients, split it into to seperate batches it eliminates most off flavors and you will not need carbon filtering

1 Pack 24 Hour Turbo Yeast 14%abv, 206 grams (split in 2 103grams each)

12 Kg Sugar. (split into 2) 6 kg each its better to use 5 kg each

46 Liters Water. (split into 2)

Ferment Between 20-30c till done (roughly 1-5 Days) Rack and clear, then Distill, you will not need to carbon filter it and you will get more booze for your buck

Pot stillers have no use for turbo's but if you're refluxing for neutral or white rum Alcotec 48 is my favorite yeast. I use one pack for 15 gallon 14% potential (that's 14KG of sugar) and it always finishes in 5 or 6 days. I use an aquarium heater to keep it cozy.

Whats it with turbo yeast i vagley herd mention of nasties in its manufacture I tried googling but with no luck

the rapid fermentation stresses the yeast and give yucky flavours which is hard to get rid off even with major carbon filtering.

with using the bakers yeast or other yeasts the fermentation is more gental and if you do your cuts right you dont need to waste time or money on filtering.

and its cheaper to not use turbos too
