a yeast question

Postby dillsandwitch » Fri Aug 24, 2012 5:24 pm

Howdy again all,

Quick and possible stupid question but here goes again.

what exactly is the difference between brewers yeast (ie turbo yeast or any yeast bought from HBS) and the lowans baking (or any baking yeast) yeast?

Basically i got into yet another disagreement with my dad about using the TPW vs the turbo yeast and clear wash. :angry-banghead:

This is probably just dad being a paranoid crackpot again but i figured the masses would know for sure having used this before.

Basically he was ranting about how bakers yeast is a no no as there is something it it that can turn the brew poisonous and kill you. apparently. He was also ranting about how no having a TPW wont produce a clearer and more neutral spirit that doesn't require any filtering if the hearts are properly cut from the heads and tails and that ALL spirits need to be filtered on carbon to remove the fusel oils that get produced in all parts of the brew.

pretty sure hes gotten some bad advice somewhere along the lines to come to this belief but wanted to ask anyways.

sorry wasn't so short after all

thanks in advance
Dill

yeah i thought so but once dad gets an idea into his head it hard to change his mind. you should here the one about the fluoride that we have in our tap water getting trapped inside the condenser via evaporation and therefore ruining the still and any future brews made through said condenser. :laughing-rolling:

lowans cant handle as high an ABV%, fine for beer and low ABV% washes but if you you want higher than 10% from your wash use a brewers yeast tjat will handle it.

Ive got a wash with lowans stuck on 9% four the last 4 days atm and its bloody annoying, will have to go get some wine yeast from the hbs tomorrow and try and re start it.

Had Lowans go well over 10% many times, it'll go to 14% in my experiences :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just sprinkle it on at around 30 degrees and give it a bit of a churn with a hand wisk to aid in aeration.

The easiest way is just do it (TPW), let him try it then tell him what it is :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Or dont tell him :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

Not real sure whats going on there Twisted but I can get to 15% with no hassles at all , never tried to push it further so I can't say where it would stall but not below that @ Dill :laughing-rolling: your not the only one with a Dad that thinks he's never wrong
