Where do you get your yeast?

Postby DaveZ » Mon Mar 18, 2013 11:02 am

Hi all, just wondering where everybody gets their yeasts from? I've been using Lowans from Coles for sugar washes but am wanting to expand my horizons somewhat but can't find an online store that has a goodselection of yeasts to choose from. Online is the best way for me as the local HBS has a very limited range and isn't interested in doing special orders. Any help would be appreciated.

Specifically, I see mention of EC-1118 and the like but cannot find a source. I can get the Still Spirits 'distillers' range from eBay, but those packs have nutrients included so I'm wondering if they're not in the same ilk as the turbo yeasts?

Cheers,
Dave.

I'm in central Qld, a couple hours from Mackay. But more after an online store if possible as there's bugger all in our local area, well, not within 2 hours drive anyway.

Cheers,
Dave.

Hey Dave,if doing a rum or UJ,after about 3 generations the yeast you started with takes on the characteristics of what you are making anyway  And believe it or not, bakers yeast is derived from molasses,so I'm led to believe.
But if you have your heart set on specialty yeasts, check out the front page of the portal mate and give the old mate a call :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft: Qld Andy says he's very helpful :handgestures-thumbupleft:

No worries, thanks mate. It's more just for the purpose of trying different things, see what difference they make, decide for myself if its worthwhile. Hell I'm even contemplating running a Turbo wash just to see how bad they are :o A rum and a bourbon style whiskey will be first cabs off the rank once I get the new still up and running, well, straight after a sacrificial sugar wash anyway. Flavoured neutral just isn't doing it for me at this point.

Cheers,
Dave.

I'll ask the old mate who I get my demijohns off,he's got a bit of a selection in his HBS,I just use the Lowans,at least I know it's not 4 years out of date like the last specialty yeast I bought :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

Thanks guys, I'll check it all out. No rush, I'm looking at a couple months yet before I'm ready to start playing.

Cheers,
