I am going to try my first tomato paste wash in the not to distant future and was wondering about yeast. ( I have only ever used alcotech 48hr from hbs).

Where do you buy it from coles? woolies? city farmers? also how much of it should i buy does it have a shelf life? any particilar type? anything else I should know about yeast before I buy my first batch?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

For the TPW you should be fine with lowan's red or any bakers yeast from the supermarket.

Just remember to get an extra 3 x 2kg bags of home brand sugar when you're there. Distillers ALWAYS need more sugar and it saves you having to buy 20kgs in one go.

as everyone else is saying the lowans bakers yeast is good stuff. cheap, good for TPW, BWKO, Macrum everything. people do buy the ec1118 from hbs and other yeast for various things as well- bit of variation to taste and personal preference

I'd never use bakers for fruit or grain but for sugar (and molasses) it's fine.

EC1118 is an excellent fruit yeast, the only one I'd use for everything from plums, figs, grapes and apples.

i use lowans with no probs now i have been doing TPW for a while now it is much much cheaper and you will end up with a better tasting product at the end
and best of all no need to filter after it comes out of the still once you try it you wont go back to turbo i have 3x25L fermenters fill with 10L of hot water out of tap add sugar and stir then top uo to 25L mark with cold water temp will be 30 pitch yeast, tomato paste and citric acid stir and leave for 1-2 weeks to ferment out run through still and hey presto you have a better tasting much cheaper product just flavour and enjoy
